Blue Jays power past Gettysburg

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Less than 24 hours after beating Johns Hopkins, the Elizabethtown College wrestling team was back on the mat against a Centennial Conference opponent on Saturday. The Blue Jays used some big scoring against Gettysburg to beat the Bullets, 36-12.

Braden Scott and Caleb Bowlin earned wins in exhibition action prior to the day's dual. Scott, in his first match of the season, pinned Julian Amadio at 2:02 of the first period. Bowlin won big, 16-0, with his first win via tech fall this season.

Back in at 125 for a second straight match, Anthony Vitola Jr. started Elizabethtown (4-0) off on the right foot, this time winning by major decision, 10-0. Braden Schuyler made it 7-0 for the Blue Jays after a 6-1 decision at 133.

Scotty Reagan had a big task in front of him, going up against returning Div. III All-American Luke Kowalski at 141. While the senior trailed in the match, his tenaciousness led him back in it and with 28 seconds left in the match, Reagan got Kowalski turned and got the pinfall victory, his first by fall of the year.

Etown led 13-0 at that point, but the Bullets won at 149, 157, and 165 to make it a 13-12 match with four bouts to go.

Gettysburg learned the same lesson that Hopkins did the night before, which is the Jays know how to close. Standing in the way of a Bullets' comeback were sophomore Ganon Smith, junior Will Davis and seniors Trai Roland and Dylan Waller.

Those four left no doubt for EC as Smith began a run of three consecutive falls. Smith's match didn't even make it out of the first period as the sophomore secured fall number three of the season with two seconds left. Davis got out ahead of James Doliscar at 184 and quickly picked up his pinfall victory 21 seconds into the second period. Roland was the fastest of the three to get his, using just 2:49 of the first. He picked up Phil Nave and put him down on his back and in moments had the six points for Elizabethtown. It was 31-12 at that point with Waller left to go.

In similar fashion to the night before, Waller overpowered his opponent and worked his way to a second consecutive tech fall victory, beating Simon Taylor 18-3 to conclude the day. It was his team-leading seventh tech fall of the season.

The wrestling team will compete at the Virginia Duals coming up on January 12-13.
