Joseph A. Whitmore Obituary

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Joseph A. Whitmore, known around Elizabethtown College as Coach Joe, passed away peacefully on Dec. 24, 2023 at 85 years old.

Coach Joe worked for 50 years at the College in several capacities during his tenure. Whitmore taught all 50 years, was an athletic trainer for 30 years and coached soccer for 17 years.

He was extremely dedicated to Blue Jay Athletics, volunteering at Etown after he retired and continuing to support and cheer on all of the College's student-athletes.

His devotion to the student-athletes over all his years is commemorated with the Blue Jay Athletic Association's Outstanding Service to Student-Athletes Award, named after Whitmore. A yearly award, the honor is bestowed upon a member of the Elizabethtown College community who, like Coach Joe, has consistently gone above and beyond the call of duty to touch the lives of Blue Jay student-athletes.

Whitmore was a Warrenton, Va. native and married 64 years to his wife, Lois. Coach Joe was inducted into the Elizabethtown College Ira R. Herr Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998. A service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to a charity of your choice.
