HAMPTON, Va. -- The Elizabethtown College wrestling team was the runner-up at the Virginia Duals this weekend.
Brian Schneider recorded his 100th career win on Saturday for the Blue Jays.
Elizabethtown put its unbeaten record on the line in the American College semifinal match with Averett, a team they faced last year at the Virginia Duals. They'd go on to beat the Cougars, ranked 23rd at the time, 19-17 in 2023. Out of the 10 matchups on Saturday, only two were the same as last year's contest, 125 and 165.
Averett grabbed an early 3-0 lead on the back of their nationally-ranked 125-pounder Mason Barrett. Etown would come back to tie and then take the lead thanks to
Deven Jackson and
Scotty Reagan. Jackson led 3-1 after the first and 6-3 after the second to earn the decision. Reagan didn't concede a point through either of the first two periods en route to his major decision, 9-1. They led 7-3 after three bouts.
EC would really take control in the middleweights, starting with
Gavin Fehr at 157. Fehr never trailed and hung on for an 8-7 decision. Then, looking for win No. 100 for his career, Schneider looked the part at 165, racking up 2:51 of riding in the first period alone after an early takedown. He continued his dominance over Anthony Taylor, whom he wrestled last year to a major decision. Schneider cruised through three periods, amassing over five minutes of riding time to tack on the bonus point for his 12-2 major. He is the ninth wrestler in the program history and first since 2001 to reach the century mark in wins. Schneider is also the first under head coach
Eric Walker's guidance to achieve the milestone. Elizabethtown led 14-6 after Schneider's match.
Ganon Smith and
Will Davis combined to provide another nine team points for the Jays. Smith earned the pinfall victory at 4:49 and Davis led throughout at 184 to get the 8-2 decision.
Dylan Waller used ride out time in overtime to get the decision to wrap up the semifinal, a 26-10 victory for Elizabethtown.
The Blue Jays had their hands full with 12th-ranked Alvernia in the first-place match. The Golden Wolves got out to an 11-0 lead until
Shane Strausser's 6-2 decision at 149 put three up for Etown.
Alvernia went ahead 20-3 before back-to-back decisions from Smith and Davis at 174 and 184. Both wrestlers led after the first period and never lost it as they went on to win their matches. Waller won by major decision at 285, 8-0, as Alvernia took the American College Division title 23-13 over Elizabethtown.
