Wrestling rolls through first two matches to advance to semifinals at Virginia Duals

HAMPTON, Va. -- The Elizabethtown College wrestling team extended its dual match win streak to six after a pair of wins on Friday at the Virginia Duals. The Blue Jays shut out Rowan College of Gloucester County before beating Belmont Abbey to advance to Saturday's semifinal round.

Elizabethtown made quick work of the Roadrunners. Ethan Liptzin began the day with a 15-0 tech fall victory at 125, which would begin the streak of bonus points in all 10 weight classes. Deven Jackson got the forfeit win at 133, Scotty Reagan earned an 11-1 major decision at 141 and Shane Strausser took care of Vinny Robles at 149 with an 18-0 tech fall.

John Maurer earned his first career dual win and first career pinfall victory, pinning Gavin O'Connor in 1:11. Brian Schneider won his first of two matches on the day getting the forfeit victory at 165.

Caleb Bowlin also won his first dual match as a Blue Jay. He stepped in at 174 for Etown and got the pinfall at 1:16. After a forfeit at 184 gave Will Davis the win and another six points for Elizabethtown, Gavin Wagner was the third Jay to get his first career dual match win. His fourth pinfall of the year made it 50-0 with Dylan Waller to go.

Waller took little time in getting his 15-0 tech fall win to close out the match, 55-0. It was the biggest win in a shutout for Etown since Nov. 20, 2016, when they blanked Penn College, 54-0, at the Lycoming Quad.

Not having had to strain too much to get the first win, the second match of the day with Div. II opponent Belmont Abbey was going to take more of a team effort to get the job done.

Liptzin made sure it began on the right track, taking only 36 seconds to win via fall and get Elizabethtown out ahead early. Braden Schuyler was down after the first and second periods, but battled back in the third to earn a big 16-8 major decision.

The Crusaders cut into that lead at 141 and 149, getting it down to 10-8.

Gavin Fehr came up big for the Blue Jays. He was down 6-5 but got the reversal and wound up pinning Jake Dodson at 157, a big six points to swing momentum back to the Blue & Gray's corner. Schneider made it a second straight fall, his sixth of the season and his 99th career win, to take Etown's advantage up to 22-8. Schneider nearly got the pin to end the first, but time barely ran out, leaving the graduate student to get it done in the second.

Ganon Smith won his bout at 174, 9-2, his first non-fall victory of the season. He was 4-1 coming into the day in duals with all four wins via pinfall. The sophomore was down 1-0 but turned that around quickly in the third to take control of the match and win handily.

Trai Roland dominated at 197, 12-1, his first major decision of the season. Waller closed out the day doing what he's done of late, scoring a 15-0 tech fall to wrap up the Jays' 34-11 win over Belmont Abbey. Waller is 8-0 in tech fall matches in 2023-24, a team-best.

Elizabethtown will face Averett in the American College semifinal round tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. The Blue Jays defeated the Cougars last season at the Virginia Duals, 19-17. The winner of that match will take on the winner of Alvernia/Reinhardt tomorrow night for first place, while the losers of each semifinal will wrestle for third.
