GRANTHAM, Pa.—The Elizabethtown women's volleyball team fell, 3-1, Wednesday evening as they took a short trip over to Messiah University.
Set one saw the Blue Jays keep a tight matchup as five straight points from Etown gave them a 7-6 advantage at the start. Etown held the lead following three Messiah errors. After a Falcon kill, Messiah and Elizabethtown were tied at 11-11. The Falcons then jumped out to a 20-14 lead. The Blue Jays came back within two after a kill from
Jena Minnick and
Gracie Britten. Through the end of the set the two teams traded points but Messiah ultimately won, 25-19.
Set two started the same with Elizabethtown and Messiah in a close match. Kills from
Emma Bitner and Minnick brought Etown out to an 8-7 lead. The Blue Jays extended their lead to 14-9 after a service ace from Minnick which forced a Falson timeout. Messiah crept closer coming within one of Etown at 17-16. While still holding the lead, Elizabethtown tallied the final three points to win, 25-21.
To start set three, Messiah jumped out to a 6-2 lead. A kill by
Katie Scaggs then cut Messiah's lead in half. A kill from
Georgianna Kahley, an ace from Minnick and two Falcon errors brought the Jays within one. Messiah went on an 8-2 run to gain a seven-point lead. Etown fought to come back tallying three straight points. Messiah ended the set with the final three points to win, 25-17.
Messiah was once again dominant at the start of the set, leading 7-2. The Blue Jays trailed by four after two kills from
Karlee Ray. Five straight points by the Falcons brought Messiah within two of set-point.
Kate Barbon recorded the final kill for Etown as the Jays fell, 25-17.
Scaggs recorded eight kills, one solo block and two block assists. Kahley, Britten, and Ray each tallied six kills.
Elizabethtown has the weekend off and will host Misericordia September 12 at 7PM for their first home match of the season.
