ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Freshman
Pedro Lyra recorded points for a second consecutive game as the Elizabethtown College men's soccer team finished Sunday's non-conference match with Rutgers-Newark with a 2-2 draw at Ira R. Herr Field. Lyra scored his first career goal in the first half.
Like they did against St. John Fisher on Friday, Elizabethtown (1-0-1) went up 1-0 on their first registered shot of the game.
Kelvin Del Cid launched a ball that sailed over the Scarlet Raiders' backline and
Mehluko Letsoalo ran onto it and into the box before depositing the ball into the net for his first of the season. That came just 1:12 into Sunday's Brothers Pizza Etown/LVC Classic finale.
Not even 10 minutes later, it was Lyra's turn. Del Cid set up the play, finding
Gavin Domsohn on the far sideline. Domsohn collected the ball and drove at the defender across the top of the box and squared a pass to Lyra. The Brazilian took a touch to get himself in position to shoot and ripped a ball past Rutgers-Newark (0-1-1) goalie Ilon Gordon to make it 2-0, his first Etown goal. Lyra had an assist in Friday's win over the Cardinals.
The Jays would outshoot the Scarlet Raiders 8-4 in the first half, though that would change in the second.
Rutgers-Newark limited Elizabethtown to just one shot over the final 45 minutes and worked their way back into the game.
Ryan Caruso's initial shot in the 67th minute was saved by Del Cid, but the rebound went to Michael Reis, who centered the ball again, and this time Caruso converted his attempt to get a goal back for Newark.
Then, as they continued to pressure about 11 minutes later, Rutgers earned a penalty in the 79th minute and Jean Paul Solano went upper right with a firm side-footed effort to level the game at 2-2.
The Scarlet Raiders had a chance late that was deemed offsides. Neither side would grab a late goal to win it for their team.
Elizabethtown will have the week off before playing at F&M next Saturday, September 9, in the annual Smith-Herr Boot Game. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Tylus Field.
