ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Pedro Guizardi started his scoring account for the Elizabethtown College men's soccer team in the first game of the season on Friday as the Blue Jays beat St. John Fisher on home soil 1-0. Guizardi's first-half goal was enough to get Etown the win as
Kelvin Del Cid earned the clean sheet on the first night of the Brothers Pizza Etown/LVC Classic.
It didn't take long for Elizabethtown (1-0-0) to go ahead.
Pedro Lyra slipped in Guizardi with a through ball in the sixth minute. The Brazilian connection worked as Guizardi got a touch to the ball to poke it past an oncoming Jadon Schlierf to give the Jays the 1-0 lead early on.
The Blue Jays had the better of the play from an attacking standpoint, outshooting the Cardinals 10-3 in the first half as they took their one-goal lead into the break.
Both defenses tightened up in the second half as each team allowed fewer shots to their opposition than they did in the first half. That suited Etown just fine, though Del Cid did need to make two saves in the second half.
Elizabethtown was able to limit any real scoring threats by St. John Fisher (0-1-0) as they ran out the clock to earn the first win of the season.
The Blue Jays will host Rutgers-Newark on Sunday at 3 p.m.
