Blue Jays held in second half as Scranton takes Landmark Championship

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- A tale of two halves on Saturday in the Landmark Conference Championship at Wolf Field between the Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team and Scranton. The Blue Jays held a three-goal halftime lead, but were outscored by four over the final two quarters as the Royals came back to win the title, 13-12. AJ Perkell was named the Most Valuable Player of the Championship for Scranton.

Similar to many games this season, Elizabethtown (12-5) got out to the fast start they usually do, putting up five first-quarter goals on the Royals. Colin Cummings recorded the first two for the Jays in the opening six minutes. Cummings' second of the afternoon made it 2-1 and started a four-goal run for EC as Riley Langen, Ben Clark, and Joey Killpatrick each scored. Mitchell Kozak got one back for Scranton (14-5) with under a minute left in the first.

A quick-hitter from Ben O'Connor started off the second quarter as Langen found No. 6 for goal No. 6 for Etown. It was O'Connor's 62nd tally of the year and first of the game. Langen then scored on a diving effort at goal, avoiding the crease violation and making it a 7-2 game for the Jays.

The Royals battled back and got two goals in quick succession to cut that five-goal deficit down to three, 7-4, with 9:07 to go in the first half. O'Connor responded with his second of the day off Cummings' feed. The sides then traded goals the remainder of the half as Matthew McAcree and Joe Boyle scored for Scranton while Gavin Gismondi had the last goal of the second quarter for the Jays. Etown led 9-6 at the break.

It was the right start to the third as Elizabethtown would have wanted with O'Connor finding Langen for the goal. The Royals were in transition and bearing in on goal, but a defensive play by Cummings stopped the attack as the Jays picked up the loose ball and went the other day. Quickly, the ball moved down the field and ended with O'Connor's pass to Langen for the deposit behind goalie Declan Allen.

Both Allen and Brayden Franey made several impressive saves throughout the games, especially a few in key spots. Allen made five saves while Franey had 13 for the Blue Jays.

The Royals produced another set of back-to-back goals 50 seconds apart with just under 10 minutes left in the third to make it a 10-8 game. Cummings set up Colin Kondracki as Etown quelled the momentum Scranton had been building, at least for a bit. Christopher Crapanzano ended the third with a goal and then started the fourth with a goal as the visitors were now within one, 11-10

It was four straight from Scranton, including three to start the fourth, that gave the Royals their first lead at 12-11 as Kozak had consecutive goals for SCR.

After a superb and pivotal save from Franey, he scooped up the ball and got it into the stick of Stewart, who surged down the field and had one thing on his mind and that was going to goal. The junior First Team short stick went for it and capitalized to tie the game at 12-12 with 4:30 to go.

Shortly thereafter and out of a timeout, the Royals' McAcree found a cutting Pat McCormack in front of goal and that would turn out to be the game-winner for the Scranton, but certainly not without some drama in the final minute of play.

Perkell was able to win the ensuing faceoff, but a Scranton turnover gave the ball back to Etown, who were now looking to equalize. Gismondi had a chance, but Allen stepped up to make the save with just over a minute and a half to go. With the ball loose after the save, a push was called on the Royals, giving the Jays 30 seconds of man-up time.

Elizabethtown had a few good looks with a shot just missed the far post and then another attempt inches away, ricocheting off the post and back into play where Scranton would get it and get back down the field looking to run off the final 55 seconds.

Out of Scranton's final timeout, used with 40 seconds left, Crapanzano lost the ball out of his stick heading toward goal as Etown had Franey pulled out to face guard. Jason Nazarenus came up with the ball and started the Blue Jays the other way with under 30 to go.

Elizabethtown elected to use a timeout with 17 seconds and with one final attempt on goal, Allen was there at the near post to stop the ball and chuck it to the other end as time ran out, giving Scranton the 13-12 championship victory.

Langen and Cummings each had four points for Etown, a hat trick plus an assist for Langen while Cummings recorded a pair of goals and a pair of assists. O'Connor also had a multi-goal effort, with two goals to go along with an assist. Jacob Griffin won 18 faceoffs and grabbed a team-high 10 ground balls.
