ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Landmark Conference runs through Elizabethtown after the men's lacrosse team blitzed Catholic on Saturday at Wolf Field in the regular season and conference finale for both teams. Etown posted nine first-quarter goals and went on to double up the Cardinals, 18-9.
Ben O'Connor had a game-high five goals as eight different players recorded at least a goal for the Jays in the victory. It is the third time Elizabethtown has gone unbeaten in conference play.
Colin Kondracki and
Lucca Scomillio put Elizabethtown (11-4, 7-0 Landmark) ahead 2-0 in the first five minutes. Kondracki scored unassisted and
Riley Langen sent one of his five assists into the cutting path of Scomillio as the junior took the feed and scored to make it 2-0 with a little over 10 minutes left in the first.
Luke D'Ambrogi was Catholic's (6-9, 5-2 Landmark) top attacker in the game. He scored back-to-back goals to level the game at 2-2, but it was then seven unanswered from the Blue Jays as they took a 9-2 lead going into the second.
Eric Hoover got the run started off the faceoff after D'Ambrogi's second goal.
Jacob Griffin won the faceoff, went down the field and dished to Hoover in the middle and he finished off the play with the goal to give Etown the lead back for good.
O'Connor's first of five came with 6:37 to go in the first.
Alex Kilgour (2), Langen (2), and
Joey Killpatrick all scored for the Jays to close out the first. Langen was able to get in close and finish out the first with a goal for EC to make it 9-2.
The Cardinals were able to get within six after a pair of goals from Mike Mulligan and Fitz McLaughlin.
Colin Cummings had started off the quarter with a goal for Elizabethtown. Some nice ball movement a man up led to Langen finding Kondracki in front of net for the goal with the man advantage.
Catholic scored with 30 seconds left in the half, but the Blue Jays wasted no time canceling that goal out as Langen found O'Connor with just two seconds before the horn to get their seven-goal lead back. EC led 12-5 at halftime.
Elizabethtown outscored Catholic 5-2 in the third with O'Connor outscoring the Cardinals by himself with a hat trick in the quarter, including a goal a man-up. For the second straight quarter, O'Connor also scored late in the period, this time with 12 seconds left in the third. Etown led 17-7 after three. Cummings was able to beat the shot clock early in the third to register his second of the afternoon. There were only six seconds showing after an Etown shot went wide of the cage. Killpatrick brought the ball back into play, threw it to Cummings, who had to shake a defender, and quickly. His quick release whipped into the left side of the net just as the shot clock buzzer sounded, giving EC the 14-5 advantage.
The Cardinals were able to score twice, but only at the beginning of the fourth and toward the end as the Blue Jays were able to shut down Catholic's attack. Killpatrick and Cummings connected for the Jays' lone goal of the fourth.
For the third time in program history since joining the conference, the Blue Jays held each of their Landmark opponents to single-digit goals. It was Catholic's second-fewest goals in a league game this season.
Derek Baldwin had a team-high two caused turnovers while
Brayden Franey made six saves in goal to earn his 10th win of the year.
Langen had a game-high seven points (2g, 5a) for the Blue Jays while O'Connor led in the goal scoring department with five. Six for Etown had multi-goal efforts. Griffin and
TJ Chapman combined for 22 faceoff wins. Griffin had a game-high 13 ground balls.
Elizabethtown, the No. 1 seed, will host Susquehanna, the No. 4 seed, on Wednesday, May 3, at 7 p.m. on Wolf Field.
