Jackson wins 125lb championship for wrestling at Mideast Futures Tournament

ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- Freshman Deven Jackson had himself a day for the Elizabethtown College wrestling team on Sunday at the Mideast Futures Tournament held at Muhlenberg College. Jackson went on to win the 125-pound championship for the Blue Jays.

Jackson started the day with a bye and then blew threw his first three matchups, winning each by major decision and outscoring his opponents 36-7. First was Luke Ragusa of York (Pa.) who he dispatched of 12-3. Next, he handled SUNY Cortland's Christian Lievano with ease, 16-4, in the quarterfinal. Caden Kucek of Wilkes awaited him in the 125-pound semifinal, with the winner moving on to the championship match. Jackson blanked Kucek, 8-0, to move on.

Jacob Delvecchio of York (Pa.) stood in his way of the title, and the championship match did not disappoint. Jackson led 4-2 after the first period with a pair of takedowns, while Delvecchio was able to counter with a pair of escapes for his two points. The Spartan wrestler then took a 5-4 lead into the third after scoring three points on Jackson in the second.

In the third, Jackson started chose bottom and earned the escape point, tying up the match at 5-5 with 1:27 to go after his escape. Neither wrestler could score on the other the rest of the way, and more importantly for Jackson because he had riding time on his side. The clock hit zeroes, the riding time point awarded, and Jackson came away with the 6-5 decision to take the 125-pound title.

Braden Schuyler went 2-2 on the day with victories by major decision and decision. Kolin Driscoll finished 1-2 with his win coming by fall.

The wrestling team will now prepare for the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional coming up this weekend at Ithaca College.
