Men's soccer tripped up by Goucher in Landmark quarters

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's soccer team scored the first and last goals of Tuesday night's Landmark quarterfinal at Ira R. Herr Field, but Goucher scored three in between to claim a 3-2 victory to move on to Thursday's semifinal round.

Elizabethtown (8-7-3) had the advantage in shots on the night and got the game's opening goal in the 28th minute on some well worked ball movement in the box. Pedro Vinent, with his back to goal, played Pedro Guizardi out to the left of goal. His cross found an open Mehluko Letsoalo in the middle and his right-footed touch found the back of the net for his second of the season.

Not too long after, Gus Dalzell pummeled a left-footer from outside the box to tie the game in the 35th minute for Goucher (10-6-2). Just before halftime, Michael Adekanmbi recorded his seventh of the year to put the Gophers up 2-1 going into the break.

The Blue Jays would outshoot Goucher 11-1 in the second half as the Gophers seemed keen on defending rather than leaving themselves open to counters.

Paul Van Engeland got a fortunate deflection to help put Goucher ahead 3-1 in the 74th minute as the Gophers did manage to get forward and drive at the defense. It was their lone shot of the second half.

Etown pulled one back in the 78th minute thanks to Guizardi. His header on Hudson Peck's corner made it a one-goal game.

Ale Sternini made some key saves through the final 45 minutes to keep Elizabethtown at bay. He parried away a few shots that seemed goal-bound. The Jays had five corners in the second half alone and did manage a goal off one of the them, but that was it. Sternini made five saves on the night.
