Hoffmann helps women's soccer to first Landmark win

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- There was only one goal Tuesday night at Ira R. Herr Field and it belonged to the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team as Jenna Hoffmann poked him the game-winning goal in the second half to help the Blue Jays to their first Landmark win of the season. Adrienne McGallicher earned the shutout for Etown.

Elizabethtown (3-6-1, 1-2-0 Landmark) had some chances early on, but the Eagles' defense did a good job of getting bodies in the way, blocking one and forcing other shots wide. Hoffmann had back-to-back chances later in the first half, but once again, Juniata (3-4-1, 0-2-1 Landmark) defenders were in the way and blocked each attempt.

After a scoreless first half, the Jays struck early on in the second half. Bailey Groff lobbed in a ball off a set piece from the far sideline, about 40-45 yards out. The ball dropped into a mess of bodies around the goal mouth, where Marissa Vandernick got a touch to the ball. Cati Besch made the initial stop, but Hoffmann was right there as the ball slowly made its way toward goal and the sophomore poked it in for her team-leading fourth of the season to give Elizabethtown the 1-0 lead.

Etown stymied the Eagles in their attacking third, not allowing a second-half shot.

Molly Kleinert nearly made it 2-0 in the 88th minute with a ball that looked bound for the upper center of the net, but Besch got her fingertips to it to push it over the bar and out for a corner. Besch also made a crucial save about 15 minutes earlier after Maddie McWhinney outran the defense and got into the box.

Elizabethtown outshot Juniata 18-3 in the game.

The Blue Jays will play at Susquehanna on Saturday, October 7, at 3:30 p.m.
