Fick paces men's cross country to second place at Landmark Championships

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Matt Fick was one of three runners in the top 10 for the Elizabethtown College men's cross country team at the 2023 Landmark Conference Championships on Friday. Fick helped pace the Blue Jays to a runner-up finish behind Moravian with 48 points.

Friday's 8,000-meter was mostly a dual between the Blue Jays and Greyhounds for the top spot. Moravian had won the previous two Landmark crowns going into the meet.

Fick was a part of the lead pack and ended up fifth overall in 26:38.3, his best Landmark finish. Fick was 12th in last year's championship race.

Daniel Myers was also among the leaders for Etown and took sixth right behind Fick in 26:39.7. For Myers, it was also his best conference finish and his first all-conference honor of his career.

Brandon Baxter finished in the top 10 for the second straight season. Seventh a year ago, Baxter placed ninth on Friday in 26:46.6 to earn another all-conference honor.

A pair of first-year runners completed Elizabethtown's scoring. Jake Forgione turned in his best 8k of the season and took 13th overall in 27:15.6 and was named the Landmark's Rookie of the Year as the top-finishing first-year runner. Derek Kendig was 15th in 27:21.9 to earn Honorable Mention.

Fick and Myers' placement earned them First Team All-Landmark accolades. Baxter and Forgione earned Second Team All-Landmark honors. Benjamin Ortiz (17th) and Christian Gingrich (19th) were also Honorable Mention for the Elizabethtown.

The Blue Jays will compete at the NCAA Div. III Mid-Atlantic Regional at Lock Haven on Saturday, November 11.
