COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College wrestling team defeated one nationally ranked team and nearly took down a second on the day while wrapping up its time at the Manganaro Duals at Ursinus College with a big win over Muhlenberg to finish the day at 2-1 overall. The Blue Jays beat No. 16 Coast Guard and lost to No. 6 Johnson & Wales on a Criteria B tiebreaker.
The U.S. Coast Guard Academy sent out six nationally-ranked individuals to face off with Elizabethtown (5-3). The Blue Jays finished the match 3-3 against the Bears' best.
In their first match of the Duals, Etown and Coast Guard traded off falls and decisions and were tied at 9-9 after 149.
Ethan Liptzin picked up a pinfall victory to start the match and
Zach Rupp won by decision.
Dorian Gonzalez and
Brian Schneider each won by decision over nationally-ranked opponents to push the Jays ahead 15-9.
Ganon Smith's 12th fall of the season, a team-best, made it 21-12.
Coast Guard won at 184 and 197 to make it close, 21-18, but
Dylan Waller finished off the match with a decision of his own, his 17th win of the year to tie Schneider. Waller's win also came over a nationally-ranked wrestler. The junior is also ranked, a contender from D3wrestle and No. 13 from the NWCA at 285. Etown won the match 24-18.
Things weren't looking as promising against sixth-ranked Johnson & Wales in the second dual of the day. Elizabethtown found itself down 15-0 going into Gonzalez's bout at 157. He won his second match of the day, this time by major decision (10-2), to put the Jays on the board. Schneider followed with a tech fall, his second of three victories on the day, to inch Etown closer at 15-9.
Smith tied the match at 15-15 with his second consecutive pin, this in 3:57 to knot things up.
Will Davis helped push the team in front with a decision at 184, 6-2.
A fall at 197 put Etown behind, but Waller came through with a sudden victory at 285 that put the teams at 21-21. Unfortunately for Elizabethtown, they would fall victim to the criteria B tiebreaker, most falls, which went to J&W, who had two to Etown's one. That team point went to Johnson & Wales to give them the 22-21 win.
The Blue Jays rebounded in a big way in their third and final matchup of the day. Two of the first three matches were forfeit victories, awarded to Liptzin and Rupp.
Scotty Reagan got the fall at 133 in 2:26.
Shane Strausser also recorded a pinfall victory at 149.
Matteo Pinnero stepped into the lineup at 157 and earned the fall at 1:50, his third win by pin of the season. That put Elizabethtown well ahead at 30-0.
Schneider improved to 3-0 on the day with a win by forfeit, his team-best 19th win of the year. Smith tied Schneider with the top record of the day for the Jays at 3-0 with his 12-0 major decision at 174. Davis won by decision to finish his day at 2-1. EC was up 43-0 at this point.
Muhlenberg won the final two weight classes as the match finished 43-12.
The wrestling team will travel to Gettysburg on Wednesday, January 11, to face the Bullets at 7 p.m.
