ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Elizabethtown College freshman
Jenna Hoffmann was in the right spot at the right time to smash a ball into the left side of the goal for the women's soccer team in Thursday's season-opening win over Muhlenberg. Hoffmann's first career goal stood over the final 72 minutes as
Trinity Soto and the defense kept their clean sheet to give the Jays a 1-0 win.
Hoffmann worked the midfield all game long and in the 18th minute, connected with
Marissa Vandernick and
Sydney Detky to produce the game's lone goal.
Quick touches and pass from Vandernick and Detky led to a pass outside the 18 into the path of an oncoming Hoffmann. Her sights set on unleashing a shot, she did just that and found the left side netting to put her team ahead 1-0.
After Elizabethtown (1-0) outshot the Mules 8-3 in the first half, Muhlenberg (0-1) began to take control of the game in the second half and pushed to level things.
Though the Blue Jays' defense was stout and Soto was not truly tested, Muhlenberg never let up. The Mules outshot the Jays 7-5 over the final 45 minutes, though Soto did not allow a ball past her.
Muhlenberg pressured late with a few corners, but Etown kept the attacks at bay and were able to see the clock out to start off 2022 with a win.
Soto ended the night with three saves in goal. Hoffmann and Detky each had three shots apiece to lead the Jays.
Elizabethtown travels to Gettysburg on Saturday, September 10, for a 7 p.m. matchup with the Bullets.
