Oaster, Miller, Soto win golds, women's track & field leads after Day 1 of Landmark Championships

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College women's track and field team won three gold medals on Saturday and six total on day one of the Landmark Outdoor Championships at Juniata College. Kelty Oaster, Erin Miller, and Trinity Soto each won gold for the Blue Jays, which has helped Etown get out to a 25-point lead after the first day with 66 points.

Oaster and Marissa Lapinsky had some work to do in the 1500m as one runner took off from the start to create a large gap for much of the race. In the final 400 meters, Oaster and Lapinsky began to surge down the backstretch, eating up much of that lead and taking control of the race in the final 200 meters. The pair, who have been side-by-side all season long, hustled to the line to go 1-2 with Oaster winning the gold and Lapinsky earning silver. Oaster's winning time of 4:44.36 is the ninth-fastest in program history.

Miller, the defending champion in the javelin, won her second straight jav gold on Saturday. She threw 37.58m (123'3") in the elements to win for Elizabethtown. Sarah Habiballah was seventh at 27.80m.

Soto won the team's third gold medal of the day. Also a defending champion in her event, Soto protected her discus gold with her second straight and did so in impressive fashion. Once again, Soto reset her own school record by nearly three feet to win the competition at 39.68m (130'2"). DaniRae Renno, in her first collegiate track and field championship meet, took silver with a new PR of 37.23m (122'1") to improve her second-place standing on the all-time list. The Jays weren't done as two more joined them on the podium. Mylea Neidig was seventh at 33.18m (108'10"), a PR that puts her eighth all-time. Francine Ohlson also threw her personal best and took eighth at 32.69m (107'3"), the 10th-best throw in school history.

Bridget Kennedy led a trio of Jays to the podium as she placed second in the 10,000m to earn silver. Madison Webber finished fifth and Amanda Kauffman was sixth.

Sydney Detky qualified for a pair of finals tomorrow, first she ran 13.26 in the 100m to make it to Sunday's final. Later in the day, she ran 27.43 to get into the 200m final for Etown.

Laura Cardona ran a new PR in the 100-meter hurdles, 17.05, to qualify third for the event final on Sunday.

Sunday's final day of the Landmark Championships gets underway at 11 a.m.
