Oaster goes back-to-back, Soto breaks discus record twice at AARTFC Championships

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- For the second straight year at the AARTFC Outdoor Championships, the Elizabethtown College women's track & field team tied for 12th. Kelty Oaster won the 800m for a second straight championship and Trinity Soto broke her discus record twice at the meet. The Blue Jays finished the championship meet with 24 points.

Five was the theme of Wednesday's day one of competition at Moravian University for Elizabethtown. Erin Miller took fifth in the javelin at 36.59m (120'0"), the second straight season she reached the podium at the meet.

On the track, Hallie Weaver ran her final 3,000 meter steeplechase of the season, and like Miller, once again was on the podium. Weaver's time of 11:38.53 was good for fifth.

Soto, the Landmark champion in the discus and Etown school record holder, reset her top mark on the all-time list on her second attempt in trials at 39.75m. That distance was among the top nine, which got her into the finals. Her first throw of finals was even better than her 39.75m as she broke 40 meters for the first time in her career. Soto threw 40.23m (132'0") and wound up fifth overall.

Sydney Detky began her heptathlon with the 100m hurdles, where she ran 17.48 to tie for the ninth-fastest on the all-time list. She also set new personal bests in the shot put and 200 meter dash. After day one, she was in seventh with 2,306 points.

On Thursday, with three events remaining, Detky wound up ninth with 3,611 points. She surpassed her previous best point total from the Messiah Invitational and moved to third all-time.

Jocelynn Itterly placed seventh in the high jump at 1.55m.

Oaster, who won the 800 meter last season, was back for a chance to make it two in a row. She did not disappoint.

In the fast heat, Oaster got out hard and put herself in front by the 200 meter point of the first lap. She came through in the lead with a 65.39 first-lap and looked stronger as the race progressed. Oaster and SUNY Delhi's Katarina Salcedo pulled away from the rest of the pack, but Salcedo couldn't make up ground on Oaster. The sophomore was in full control and won the section, and the race, with a new meet record time of 2:12.30, beating TCNJ Allison Uhl's 2019 record of 2:12.77.

Elizabethtown, who finished third at the Landmark Championships a week and a half ago, was the top-performing Landmark team at the AARTFC Championships.
