Kunkle's complete game helps softball split at Neumann

ASTON, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College softball team tied a season-high with 17 hits in game two and Cierra Kunkle pitched her second complete game of the season to help the Blue Jays to a 7-5 win to earn the split at Neumann. Emily Polimeni and Ashley Mistichelli each had two RBIs in the game-two win.

GAME 1: NEUMANN 2, ELIZABETHTOWN 0
There were only two runs scored in game one and both belonged to Neumann (7-18), which they scored in the bottom half of the first.

Despite outhitting the Knights, Elizabethtown (9-15) left six runners on base and weren't able to get a run home.

Amelia Lark had a pair of hits for Etown in the game one loss. Polimeni, Paige Phillips, and Kristen Aydelotte also had hits. Aydelotte recorded her first career triple in the game.

GAME 2: ELIZABETHTOWN 7, NEUMANN 5
Kadyn Crisswell followed Kaitlyn Witmer's double to right with a single of her own to right center, her first of three hits on the game. Crisswell then stole second, and with a throwing error on the play, Witmer scored safely to give the Jays a 1-0 lead in the first.

Neumann would tie the score in the next half inning with a run of their own. The Knights would plate a run for the second consecutive inning to start game two and take a 2-1 lead going into the third.

Still down 2-1 in the fourth, the Blue Jays reclaimed the lead. Polimeni sent a triple to right center that scored two as Courtney Fitzsimons and Cassidy Dodds crossed home to make it 3-2 for Etown. Witmer added an RBI base hit to bring home Polimeni from third.

The Jays weren't done scoring as they put up another three runs in the fifth. Crisswell doubled down the left field line as Fitzsimons scored her second run of the game. Mistichelli singled in the other two runs with a hit up the middle. Elizabethtown led 7-2 at that point.

The Knights made it interesting late, getting two runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut it to 7-4. A single in the sixth could have been two runs, but Crisswell delivered a throw to home to get the second runner out and keep it at 7-5 as one scored on the play.

Kunkle made it a clean seventh inning as she retired the side in order to close out the game for her second win of the season.

Eight players recorded a hit in the game for the Jays and six had multi-hit efforts, led by Crisswell, Mistichelli, and Lark's three hits. Witmer, Dodds, and Fitzsimons had two apiece.

The softball team will host Juniata for a Landmark doubleheader at The Nest on Saturday, April 9, at 1 & 3 p.m.
