Blue Jays Run Past Falcons in Non-Conference Action

GRANTHAM, Pa. - The Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team won its second consecutive game, topping Messiah 15-7 in non-conference play Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Blue Jays move to 4-4 on the season, while the Falcons fall to 3-4. Etown has won three of its last four games.

Senior Owen Yake continued his offensive burst to the season, finishing with six points on five goals and one assist. Classmate Micah Ballew finished with a hat trick, while junior Riley Langen racked up four points on a goal and three assists. 

Messiah was paced by sophomore RJ Mellor, scoring two goals and adding one assist. 

Leading 5-4 with 5:37 remaining in the first quarter, the Blue Jays grabbed the momentum, rattling off a 4-0 run to take a 9-4 lead into the half. The spurt saw four different goal scorers in Ballew, senior Nick Cost, Senior Danny Gilbert, and Langen.

Etown continued the streak in the third quarter, outscoring Messiah 4-0 to push its lead to 13-4. The third period run was highlighted by a goal from sophomore defenseman Gio Raso. Etown completed its fourth victory of the season in the fourth quarter behind freshman Alex Ly's first two career goals for the 15-7 victory.

Sophomore Brayden Franey (4-3) earned the win in goal, making nine saves and allowing a season-low four goals.  

Sophomore Josh Grove (2-2) made 15 saves and allowed 15 goals in the loss.

Gilbert continued to dominate the face-off X this season, winning 17-19 with a game-high 13 ground balls. Raso and sophomore Derek Baldwin caused two turnovers each and senior Wes Mills was second on the team with five ground balls.

Elizabethtown opens Landmark Conference play on Saturday, March 26 at home against Scranton. Opening face-off is set for 1 p.m. Classmate Alex Newman played the final quarter for Etown, making one save and allowing three goals.
