Gonzalez, Schneider help lead wrestling to first-place finish at Messiah Invitational

GRANTHAM, Pa. -- Dorian Gonzalez and Brian Schneider each won their weight classes on Saturday for the Elizabethtown College wrestling team at the Messiah Invitational. In all, nine Blue Jays placed on the day as Etown finished first out of nine teams with 123.5 points.

Gonzalez ended the day with two pinfalls, a tech fall, and a decision to finish atop the 157-pound bracket. After an initial bye, he pinned Gettysburg's Cooper Leszczuk in 5:11. The junior followed that up with a dominating performance against Deontae Frederick of McDaniel, a 19-3 technical fall to advance to face Jake Hoffmann of Johns Hopkins. Gonzalez got the better of the Blue Jay matchup to head to the first-place match against Wheaton's Cade Zeamer. Though a little closer than his previous matches of the day, Gonzalez defeated Zeamer with a 5-2 decision to take first at 157.

Schneider, like Gonzalez, had a bye to start the day. The senior got right to work against Syler Weber of Liberty, winning by fall at 3:00. Schneider made even quicker work of Washington & Lee's Jak Krouse, pinning the his Generals' opponent in 2:07. With a spot in the first-place match on the line, he took on Messiah's Zach Needles. The Etown senior prevailed by a 4-2 decision to face off with Alexander LaVeck of McDaniel for the 165-pound title at the invitational. It would end up a decisive victory for Schneider as he won handily, 8-1, by decision.

Dylan Waller placed second at 285, winning by major decision, pinfall, and decision before dropping a close 3-2 decision to Jefferey Allen of Liberty.

Ganon Smith got the decision, 9-2, in the third-place match at 174 over Zachary Kiminsky of Liberty in his first career invitational in an Elizabethtown uniform. Fellow Newport, Pa native Will Davis was fourth at 184.

Shane Strausser took fourth at 149 while Tyler Phenegar earned fifth by medical forfeit at 197.

A pair of Blue Jays matched up in the fifth-place match at 133 as Braden Schuyler was fifth and Owen Heffner sixth.

Etown edged Washington & Lee for first place at the invite by just half a point.

The Jays will compete in their first dual of the season on Wednesday, November 9, at Franklin & Marshall. The match is set for a 7 p.m. start.
