Wrestling comes up a point shy against Shippensburg, 19-18

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- No last minute heroics this time for the Elizabethtown College wrestling team in Tuesday's close 19-18 dual match loss to Shippensburg. Ganon Smith, Dylan Waller, Scotty Reagan, Zach Rupp, and Brian Schneider each won their bouts for the Blue Jays.

Smith got Elizabethtown ahead in the match as they began the contest at the 174-pound weight class. Smith earn a 7-1 decision over Nyiem Flucas to put the Jays ahead 3-0.

Down 7-3 in the heavyweight matchup, it was tied 1-1 late between Waller and Danny Scheib. The junior was able to circle and get Scheib to the mat for the two-point takedown with less than a minute to go in the third period and grabbed back three points for Etown with his 3-1 decision.

Then, trailing 13-6, Reagan came through for the Jays with a sudden victory overtime decision after his match with Kyle McCollum was tied 1-1 and needed overtime. That brought Elizabethtown within four, 13-9.

Rupp was able to put his team in front, earning his first pinfall victory of the season at 2:43 to make it 15-13 for the Blue Jays.

Shippensburg (4-0) took 149 and 157 with a pair of decisions and led by four going into the night's final match.

A tech fall or pin would have won the match for the Jays in another tightly contested dual, just as it was last week against Wilkes. Schneider was able to get the better of Kyler Everly, but a 6-0 decision put Etown a point short of the Raiders on the night.

The wrestling team will contest the Battle for the Belt with Johns Hopkins at the Bowers Center next Friday, December 2.
