ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Penalty kicks decided which team was headed to Saturday's Landmark Championship between the Elizabethtown College men's soccer team and visiting Goucher. The Blue Jays would go on to win the PK shootout 3-1 thanks to three consecutive saves from senior
Kelvin Del Cid.
First, 90 minutes wasn't enough to decide a winner between Elizabethtown (8-5-5) and Goucher (9-4-5) in Wednesday night's Landmark semifinal at Ira R. Herr Field. The Gophers held a slim 8-7 advantage in shots, but many attempts for both sides were blocked or off target as each team, defensively, bogged down the other.
Then, another 20 minutes couldn't decide a winner, so to penalty kicks the Blue Jays and Gophers went.
Etown was up first and Goucher freshman keeper Ale Sternini made a diving save to deny the Jays on the first attempt. Ali Kazim Nakhid converted his chance for Goucher and they led 1-0 after the first round.
Jeffrey Bennett calmly slotted his shot by Sternini for the goal. From there, Del Cid took over the show for Elizabethtown. Diving to his left, Del Cid denied Xavier Dever a chance to get the Gophers back in front by getting his hand on the ball and keeping it out.
Cade Brubaker put the ball out of Sternini's reach in the third round of PKs. Del Cid made a second consecutive stop, this time on Nick Sickler, who tried to go left side. The Reading, Pa. native stretched out and made a brilliant finger tip save to push the ball outside the post to keep Etown in front, 2-1.
Ryan Hepler smashed in his penalty to leave no doubt. Del Cid would end things on the next kick as he again guessed correctly and kept Goucher's opportunity out to send the Blue Jays to Saturday's championship.
Elizabethtown will host fourth-seeded Scranton at Ira R. Herr Field at 2 p.m. The Royals upset top-seeded Catholic 1-0 at Carlini Field.
