WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Catholic jumped out to a lead and didn't give it up as they defeated the Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team 16-8 in the Landmark Championship at Carlini Field on Saturday.
Owen Yake had a team-high two goals and was one of seven different goal scorers.
Mike Scrafano recorded the 100th goal of his career in the game.
Catholic got out ahead 3-0 over the first ten minutes of the first quarter before Elizabethtown responded with a goal of its own. Scrafano's 100th was Etown's first of the game, which made it 3-1 with 4:28 left in the opening period. The Cardinals went on to post another three goals and took a 6-1 lead into the second.
The Blue Jays began the second with
Nick Cost finding
Thomas Palen for the goal, which was Palen's sixth man-up tally of the season and 16th of his career. The goal broke the program record of 15 career man-up goals set by Frankie Puzzangara and Shawn Corcoran. Catholic answered with a pair to go back up by six, 8-2.
Micah Ballew and Yake registered goals a little over three minutes apart to close out the first half. The Cardinals led 8-4 at the break.
Another strong start out of the half for Catholic helped the hosts take a commanding lead into the fourth. CATHU posted six third-quarter goals and led 14-4 going into the final 15 minutes.
Colin Cummings,
Brandon Sankey,
Cody Richter, and Yake scored in the fourth for the Jays, but Catholic's lead was too much to overcome as they ended up doubling Elizabethtown 16-8 by the end to win the Landmark Conference Championship.
Tom Mahoney made 18 saves in goal for Etown.
