WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Elizabethtown College women's tennis team overcame a two-point deficit to tie the match at four, but could not complete the comeback, falling to Catholic, 5-4, Saturday afternoon in the Landmark Conference Quarterfinals.
With the loss, the Blue Jays finish the season 3-6, while the Cardinals improve to 6-2 overall.
Down 2-1 after doubles, Etown tied the score as graduate student
Lenea Riehl topped Grace Connell at #2 singles, 6-2, 6-2.
The Cardinals took the next two matches at #3 singles and #5 singles to move ahead by two (4-2) and looking to close out the match.
Freshman
Olivia Richards, however, brought the Blue Jays back within one, securing a 6-2, 6-3 win at #4 singles against Colleen McLaughlin. Sophomore
Katie Hollen followed up Richards with a win of her own at #6 singles, scoring a 6-1, 6-3 win over Olivia Sensenbrenner and knotting the match at four.
In the final match of the day, junior
Kailey Caroland took the first set against Brooke Simonson at #1 singles, 6-1, but Simonson responded, taking the final two sets, 6-4 and 6-0, securing the 5-4 victory for Catholic.
