CLERMONT, Fla. -- Paige Phillips and
Tori Caputo each pitched complete games for the Elizabethtown College softball team on the final day of games during the spring break trip at Legends Way Ballfields. Caputo threw her first career complete game shutout in game two.
Game 1: Elizabethtown 8, Carnegie Mellon 6
Elizabethtown (6-6) put up four runs in the first inning without even recording a hit.
Brinley Schmidt scored on an error for the first run of the game. Phillips was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home a run.
Ashley Mistichelli and
Courtney Fitzsimons were also credited with RBIs in the inning after drawing bases loaded walks.
Carnegie Mellon (0-1) scored a run in the second, but Phillips doubled to right to get the run back for the Blue Jays.
The Tartans answered in the third with a pair of tallies to make it 5-3. E-town, once again, responded as Schmidt singled through the right side to get
Vanessa Boop to third. A fielding error in the outfield allowed Boop time to get home and score safely to make it 6-3.
CMU got within a run as they scored twice in the fourth, but Elizabethtown would grab two in the fifth to make it 8-5. A wild pitch allowed Schmidt to score. Then,
Lindsey Fasolo singled up the middle to score
Grace Hussey.
A run in the sixth for the Tartans wasn't enough as Phillips retired the side in order in the seventh for the complete game victory.
Game 2: Elizabethtown 7, Dominican (Ill.) 0
The Blue Jays avenged a loss last year in Florida to Dominican (1-4) and did so in style.
Caputo was on her game against the Stars, scattering six hits across seven innings of work without allowing a run. The freshman worked out of a jam in the third as the bases were loaded with two outs. Caputo induced a pop up to Hussey at second base to get out of the inning.
Phillips got E-town on the board with a two-run single in the first.
Taylor Herman lobbed a ball into right center to get Phillips home as the Jays led 3-0 after one.
Hussey and
Kaitlyn Witmer hit back-to-back RBI singles to increase the lead to 5-0 in the second.
Fasolo added an RBI hit in the fourth as she singled to center. Herman added her second RBI of the game in the seventh inning with another base knock to right center.
Caputo sat the side down in order in the bottom of the seventh to finish off her shutout. She struck out one batter in the game to move to 4-2 on the season.
Elizabethtown will host Catholic to kick off Landmark Conference play on Saturday, March 14, at The Nest.
