ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Senior
JD Haaf hammered home the game winner in the first overtime as the men's soccer team secured its first win of the season over Plattsburgh State, 2-1, Saturday evening.
With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 1-1 while the Cardinals fall to 0-2 on the season.
Haaf's goal in extra-time was his first of the season while freshman
Tate Mohney scored his second goal in as many games. Freshman
Kelvin Del Cid tallied his first collegiate assist on the game winner.
Plattsburgh State's lone goal was scored by freshman Devin Lambe and sophomore Alex Alejo recorded an assist.
In the first half of play, Plattsburgh State and Elizabethtown each scored once to send the game to halftime tied at 1-1. Both goals were scored off of free kicks, with the Blue Jay's goal coming first. In the 31st minute, Elizabethtown drew a foul just outside the Carindals' penalty box. Mohney left the goalie frozen and scored into the right side of the net to make the score 1-0 in favor of the Blue Jays.
However, Plattsburgh would respond less than three minutes later. After a Blue Jay foul, sophomore midfielder Alex Alejo took a free kick from the left sideline. Alejo sent a cross to the front of the net to Lambe, who promptly scored his first collegiate goal.
Neither team could find a goal in the second half, forcing overtime for the second-straight game to start the season for Elizabethtown.
After a save, Del Cid sent a punt in the Plattsburgh half. After one bounce, Haaf touched it past a defender, dribbled in on goal and rifled a shot into the left corner for the game-winning goal.
Del Cid (1-1) earned his first career win, making four saves.
Junior Ryan Wilson (0-2) made three saves for the Cardinals.
Elizabethtown held a 14-10 edge in shots in the match, but shots on goal were even at 5-5.
