CLERMONT, Fla. -- Kady Johnson,
Paige Phillips, and
Jillian Meitzler combined to hit 7-for-9 for the Elizabethtown College softball team in Monday's 7-3 win over Monmouth (Ill.). The Blue Jays fell to the College of St. Elizabeth in their second game of the day, 7-4.
Elizabethtown 7, Monmouth (Ill.) 3
Elizabethtown (2-2) was down 3-0 heading into the bottom of the third when the bats woke up and the Blue Jays answered the runs from Monmouth (0-4). Phillips led off the inning with a single. Meitzler followed that up with a single of her own. Both runners advanced a base on an error and E-town had two runners in scoring position.
Johnson drove in Phillips with an RBI base knock, her third straight game with an RBI. Since Meitzler was able to move up to third, she was able to tag up on
Brinley Schmidt's sac fly to center. The Jays were now down just 3-2.
Emma Varrato hit a one-out single to right and Johnson moved up to third.
Sarah Personette added Elizabethtown's third run of the inning to tie the game with another sac fly RBI.
Kaitlyn Witmer singled to left a batter later and scored Varrato from second after she moved up a base on a passed ball. EC led 4-3 after three innings.
Meitzler tacked on a run in the fourth with the Jays' third sac fly of the game. Phillips hit her first career home run in the fifth inning, a two-run shot, to make it 7-3.
Amber Sergas went the distance for Elizabethtown, giving up three runs (two earned) over the seven innings with two punch outs. It was the senior's first win of the year.
Johnson was 2-for-4 in the game, Phillips went 3-for-3, and Meitzler was 2-for-2.
College of St. Elizabeth 7, Elizabethtown 4
Of the 13 innings played between Elizabethtown and St. Elizabeth (2-2), two innings contained all of the game's runs.
In the top of the fifth, Schmidt scored on a wild pitch after coming on to pinch run for
Christina Dark, who was on first after a one-out hit. The bases were loaded for
Taylor Herman, who cleared them all with a double to left field. E-town went ahead 4-0.
The Eagles scored all their runs in the sixth. CSE got four of those before the first out of the inning and added three more before the sixth was over. The side was retired in order in the seventh for Elizabethtown and the Eagles claimed the 7-4 win.
Dark had two hits to lead the Jays. Meitzler, Herman,
Amelia Lark, and
Catherine Amos added hits for E-town. It was the first of her career for Amos, who started in right field and scored a run.
Elizabethtown will play at 9 a.m. on Wednesday against Regis and at 11:15 a.m. against Saint Vincent.
