Nizolak delivers in OT win for men's lacrosse

GALLOWAY, N.J. -- The Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse team stormed out ahead on Stockton in Saturday's non-conference matchup in South Jersey. The Ospreys battled back to force overtime, but Scott Nizolak delivered the game-winning goal as the shot clock was about to expire and give the Blue Jays an 11-10 win.

It was a dominant first quarter by Elizabethtown (3-4), who led 6-0 after one period. Nick Cost, Andrew Watts, and Mike DiGenova each scored twice for the Jays in the opening quarters and they led 6-0 through 15 minutes.

Alex Filbert's goal made it 7-0 just 27 seconds into the second quarter. Nick Sicilia won the faceoff and gave E-town the first possession, which was finished off by Filbert's goal.

Eric Ellis got Stockton (5-1) on the board a little over a minute later as it began a 9-2 run for the Ospreys that extended into the third and fourth quarters. Elizabethtown led 8-3 at the half.

Stockton made its move in the third quarter using a 3-0 advantage in goals to get within 8-6 by the start of the fourth. Watts recorded his third of the game 1:25 into the fourth with a man-up goal after the Ospreys were hit with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty to start the period. Watts made them pay with the tally that stopped a stretch of five unanswered by Stockton.

The Ospreys would tie it up with 5:49 left in the fourth. Filbert put the Blue Jays back ahead with 4:05 to go after Mike Scrafano found the junior for the goal.

A J.J. McKenna goal with 2:44 to go in regulation and none the rest of the way meant overtime was needed to decide the winner.

Stockton won the faceoff and had possession, but a missed shot and eventual turnover proved costly. Jeremy Klipple caused the turnover and a change of possession gave it to Elizabethtown. The ball never made it back to the Ospreys as Nizolak would finish off the game with a lone second left on the shot clock and 1:42 to go in the first OT to win it for the Jays. DiGenova provided the assist on the game-winning goal.

Tom Mahoney made 11 saves for E-town. Justin Ruiz had 19 for the Ospreys.

Elizabethtown will open Landmark Conference play with Catholic on Saturday, March 23, at Wolf Field for a 1 p.m. matchup with the Cardinals.
