WILKES-BARRE, Pa. -- Seven of the ten weight classes were contested Friday night at King's (Pa.) and the Elizabethtown College wrestling team led each one of the bouts as the Blue Jays ended the night with a 36-12 dual victory over the Monarchs.
Nick Gonzalez and
Elijah Flasher each won by pin fall to spur E-town on to the 24-point win.
King's (Pa.) (1-17) got off to a 3-0 lead with a decision at 125 after a close bout between Dakota Quick and
Josh McLaughlin. McLaughlin led in the first with a takedown, but Quick escaped shortly thereafter. Though, Elizabethtown (2-8) held the 2-1 lead going into the second period. The scoreline remained the same through the two minutes. The Monarchs elected to take bottom to start the third and an escape tied the score at two. A build up of riding time allowed Quick to win the match by 3-2 decision.
A forfeit at 133 by King's allowed E-town to get back in front, and, from there they didn't look back.
Nick Gonzalez led 2-0 after the first and pinned Tony Immediato after scoring the reversal before ultimately putting him away with the pin fall victory early in the second period, his fourth win by pin fall victory this season.
Josh Paisley followed that up with a 7-2 decision over Matt Sparks. Paisley scored a takedown in the first, but Sparks cut the junior's lead in half with an escape. Sparks chose bottom after Paisley deferred to begin the second. Sparks recorded his second escape of the match that knotted it at 2-2, but Paisley was awarded two for another takedown. Paisley was then down to start the third. He tacked on three more points with an escape and his third takedown of the 149-pound bout to finish with the 7-2 decision and another three points for the Blue Jays, who led 15-3 going into 157.
Kade Kravits edged
Kyle Bythell, again by riding time, 4-3.
Hunter Beaudet made up those points and then some with a tech fall at 4:15 of the 165-pound matchup with Nicholas Palazzo. The freshman got on the opposition early with a takedown and a near fall, which he was given two points on the two-count. Beaudet continued to push ahead in the second with a pair of near fall four-counts and ended it at 16-0, his second tech fall of the year.
At 174, it was more of the same for Elizabethtown.
Colton Shriner got out in front of Nicholas Price 6-0 after the first, nearly securing the pin in the opening three minutes. Shriner was close again in the third period, already with a substantial advantage over Price. Shriner finished with a 14-4 major decision as E-town was now ahead 24-6.
The Monarchs pulled within 24-12 after a forfeit at 184 by the Jays. That was quickly countered by
Elijah Flasher's pin of John Hooper at 197. Already with a takedown and a 2-0 lead in the first, Flasher got his first pin fall for Elizabethtown at 2:50 to make it 30-12. The Blue Jays got another six with a Monarchs' forfeit at 285 to conclude the night at 36-12.
Elizabethtown will host Messiah next Friday, February 8, at Thompson Gymnasium.
