ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Gettysburg trailed the Elizabethtown College wrestling team early, but grabbed the lead and didn't look back in a 31-15 win over the Blue Jays on Friday night at Thompson Gymnasium.
Elizabethtown (1-8) had an early 6-0 lead after a forfeit by Gettysburg (5-2) at 125 pounds. The Bullets were on the board after 133 with a major decision for Alex Shaffer. Gettysburg then took the lead, 10-6, after Sean Thompson's pin at 141.
After a second major decision for the Bullets,
Josh Paisley went toe-to-toe with Ray Martin at 157. Paisley got Martin down 44 seconds into the first period, but the freshman from Gettysburg escaped shortly thereafter as Paisley held a slim 2-1 advantage that carried into the second. Martin chose down after the choice was deferred by E-town. Martin scored on a reversal and had Paisley until he escaped 33 seconds later and the two were tied 3-3 heading into the third. Paisley elected to go down to start the period and escaped 25 seconds in and retook the lead. Martin was given two by the referee on a takedown with 1:09 left in the third as he held on to a 5-4 lead. Paisley escaped to make it 5-5, but despite the tie at the end of the period, Martin's riding time provided him the point and got the decision, 6-5.
Kyle Bythell got the Blue Jays back on track at 165 with a major decision. Mason Canonico led after the first three minutes of action, 2-1, on a takedown, but Bythell got loose with 29 seconds left in the first. Canonico started down and escaped 20 seconds into the second, but a Bythell takedown at 1:31 of the second led to a four-point nearfall count 28 seconds later. Canonico was also charged with a pair of stalling warning, which gave Bythell an extra point and he took command of the bout and went 8-3 up into the third. He scored another takedown and earned a second point after Canonico was hit with another stalling. The major decision pushed E-town to 10 points in the match as they now trailed just 17-10.
Colin Kowalski, the team's leader in wins on the season and a d3wrestle.com contender, won by pin fall at 174 and Daniel Ebert added a tech fall at 184 to boost the Bullets ahead 18 prior to the start of the 197 matchup between
Elijah Flasher and Austin Roskos. Flasher took command early and set the tone with a takedown and nearfall four to go up 6-1. Another takedown and nearfall two count made it 10-1 by the end of the first. Flasher continued to add to his lead and wound up with an 18-3 tech fall.
Nationally-ranked senior Paul Triandafilou won the final bout of the night with a 5-0 decision to make it a 31-15 final score.
The Blue Jays will compete at the Pete Willson-Wheaton Invitational next weekend, beginning at 12 p.m. on Friday, January 25.
