ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Elizabethtown women's volleyball steamrolled Rowan, 3-0, in the de facto championship match to claim the Blue Jay Classic on Saturday at Thompson Gymnasium.
It wasn't surprising to see the Blue Jays and Profs matching up with 3-0 weekend records, but the one-sided result was surely unexpected.
Elizabethtown set the tone with 15 kills and a .364 hitting percentage in the first set and never hit lower than .200 in any set on its way to a commanding sweep by 25-13, 25-15 and 25-18 scores.
Senior middle hitter
Mackenzie Garner recorded a match-high 16 kills to earn MVP and All-Tournament Team honors. Garner hit .700 (16-2-20) against Rowan and finished the weekend with 49 kills in 14 sets over four matches. She heads into Tuesday evening's home match against Lancaster Bible needing 18 kills to become the seventh player in program history to reach 1,000 in a career.
Elizabethtown, which won its sixth match in a row to move a game over .500 (7-6) for the first time this season, came close to doubling up the Profs (9-4) in kills, 45-24.
Shelly Yohe's eight kills were second most in the match to Garner's 16.
Marisa Krinock added seven, while
Sarah Schneider and
Elle Shatto followed with six each.
Schneider led four Blue Jays in double-figures defensively with 14 digs.
Rileigh Hudock had 33 assists and 11 digs, and
Allison Fischer and
Aiyana Tietze-Di Toro both had 10 digs.
Kailey Gallagher and Megan Jacobi led Rowan with seven kills, but the Profs could never sustain a consistent run of play in order to challenge the hosts.
