CARLISLE, Pa. -- When
Mackenzie Garner is on top of her game, opponents are in trouble.
Dickinson found that out firsthand on Wednesday night, as the Blue Jays' senior middle hitter tallied a season-high 17 kills and a .438 hitting percentage in a 3-0 sweep.
Garner had no less than five kills in any set, including a match-high seven in the second, to pull within 67 of 1,000 in her career.
Garner had five kills and two blocks, while fellow middle hitter
Marisa Krinock also posted five kills in a 25-20 Elizabethtown first-set victory.
A quick 4-0 burst fueled by a pair of Kylie Albertsen kills pulled the Red Devils (4-6) even at 16 in the middle stages of the first, but Krinock answered with back-to-back kills of her own and the Jays would not be challenged again.
Rileigh Hudock had two aces and 10 assists in the set, and Elizabethtown (3-6) was led defensively by five digs from
Elle Shatto,
Aiyana Tietze-Di Toro and
Shelly Yohe.
Dickinson never recovered from the setback. The Red Devils hit just .032 in the second set and .000 in the third, dropping the sets by 25-14 and 25-16 scores.
Elizabethtown seized the opportunity, getting off to fast starts and burying the hosts early in each of the last two sets.
In the second, Garner came out swinging with three kills and Shatto had two as the Jays went up 8-3. Garner, Hudock and
Sarah Schneider all had a kill when the Blue and Gray opened up a 9-2 lead early in the third, but the Red Devils didn't help themselves by committing three attacking errors, a setting error and a service error.
Garner's 17 kills came against just three errors on 32 attempts. The Huntingdon, Pennsylvania native also had four blocks, including one solo.
Krinock finished with seven kills and a solo block, while Schneider had seven kills, eight digs, three aces and a block assist.
Elizabethtown's Hudock totaled a match-high 29 assists and seven digs. Shatto led the team with 12 digs.
Hannah Riley led Dickinson with eight kills and Tatiana Lopez collected a match-high 16 digs.
E-town will host the Blue Jay Classic this coming Friday and Saturday, their debut at Thompson Gymnasium in 2018. The Jays are scheduled to meet Misericordia and Eastern Mennonite at 5 and 7 p.m. on Friday.
