Women's tennis stopped by Scranton in Landmark semis

SCRANTON, Pa. -- Top-seeded Scranton played every bit like the Landmark Conference's best regular season team on Tuesday, blanking the Elizabethtown women's tennis team, 5-0, in a semifinal at the Royal Courts.

Three closely contested doubles matches all favored the Royals (17-3) in the end.

Scranton's No. 1 tandem of Julia Frattaroli and Nastashia DeNunzio slipped by Lenea Riehl and Meghan Chemidlin, 8-6, for a crucial point, and the hosts won by 8-6 scores at flights two and three.

Chemidlin and her Blue Jay (7-7) teammates tried to push back in singles. The junior from Stewartsville, New Jersey won her first set over DeNunzio, 6-1, at No. 2, and Elizabethtown won at least four games in the opening set at flights one through five.

An experienced Scranton side that fell to E-town in the 2015 and 2017 championship matches provided too high a hurdle to overcome this season.

Elyse Smilnak closed out Kaitlyn O'Connor 6-3, 6-0 at sixth singles for a 4-0 Scranton lead and the Royals clinched a spot in the title match with Tatiana Klacko's 6-4, 6-4 defeat of Sarah Donner at No. 4.

Scranton's win was its second against the Blue Jays this season after dropping each of the first five matches between the two since Elizabethtown joined the Landmark prior to the 2014-15 season.

Tuesday's loss brought to a close the Blue Jays' three-year run of supremacy in the conference. Elizabethtown entered the season as three-time defending champs and had won eight straight conference crowns going back to 2010 as a member of the MAC Commonwealth Conference.

Scranton moves on to Saturday's final against third-seeded Catholic, a 5-4 winner over second-seeded Moravian in the other semifinal.

Elizabethtown's season ends with a 7-7 overall record. The Blue Jays have finished with a .500 or better record every season since 2003, a streak of 15 consecutive seasons.
