Blue Jays pull out 7-5 road win at Drew

MADISON, N.J. -- Mike DiGenova factored into five of Elizabethtown's seven goals and Tom Mahoney made 11 saves as the Blue Jays gutted out a tough 7-5 Landmark Conference road victory at Drew on Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Jays stepped on the gas right off the opening face-off, as Kyle Pienik won it and quickly sent a pass to DiGenova, who found freshman Brandon Sankey near the right post for a 1-0 lead just seven seconds in. Sankey's goal tied for the fastest to start a game in program history with Ryan McCafferty, who also scored seven seconds into a game at DeSales on April 28, 2007.

Drew knotted the score three minutes later on a Kyle MacDonnell goal, but it took the Jays (5-6, 2-1 Landmark) less than 50 seconds to respond. This time Sankey returned the favor to DiGenova.

Elizabethtown increased its lead to 3-1 on a Scott Nizolak marker with 1:22 to go in the first and Sankey picked up his second assist of the afternoon.

Junior Andrew Watts and sophomore Mike Scrafano scored second-quarter goals to put the visitors up 5-3 at halftime.

Scrafano's team-leading 23rd goal of the season early in the third gave the Blue and Gray its largest lead of the afternoon, 6-3, but the Rangers (3-8, 0-2) scored the next two to make it a one-goal game with 4:26 left in regulation.

DiGenova finished Drew off, however, scoring on the rebound of an Alec Leslie shot with 3:18 to go.

The two teams were well-matched, with both attempting 16 shots on goal, E-town picking up one more ground ball (26-25) and Drew committing one less turnover (13-12).

DiGenova led the offense with five points on two goals and three assists. All three of Sankey's points came in the opening quarter.

Griffin Liebsch forced a team-high three turnovers and Mahoney stopped six of his 11 shots in the second half. Pienik won 9-of-15 face-offs.

Elizabethtown starts a four-game stretch at home on Wednesday at 4 p.m. against Stockton.
