Mahoney makes school record 27 saves in loss to No. 2 York

YORK, Pa. -- Sophomore goalie Tom Mahoney made an Elizabethtown men's lacrosse single-game record 27 saves during Wednesday night's 13-5 loss to second-ranked York.

Mahoney was under fire all night as the talented Spartans sent 54 shots his way --the most a Blue Jay team has allowed since 2012. Though he made six or more saves in all four quarters, Mahoney and Elizabethtown (3-5) could not contain a York squad that appears to be a serious threat for a national title.

Hunter Davis scored a pair of first-quarter goals, including a dagger with one second remaining. Teammate Matt Whitcher potted a pair in the second and the Spartans (9-1) registered 10 unanswered goals before Griffin Liebsch got the Blue Jays on the board with four minutes left in the third.

The Blue Jays scored four times in the final 15 minutes. Alex Filbert had two goals, while Austin Dews and former Spartan Ben Hiltebeitel also found the back of the net.

Davis and Whitcher both tallied hat tricks for York. Teammates Brad Casale (two goals, assist) and Jake Hvazda (goal, two assists) also collected three points.

The Spartans controlled possession, aided greatly by winning 14-of-21 faceoffs and forcing 13 of the Jays' 27 turnovers. York faceoff specialist Billy Sasso won 12-of-18.

York held a 54-20 advantage in shots, won the ground ball battle 48-22 and was 24-of-25 on clears.

Jeff Bloom and Jeremy Klipple forced two turnovers each for the Blue Jays. Klipple had a team-high five ground balls and freshman midfielder Alec Leslie had four.

Mahoney's 27 saves were four more than Davis Miracle's previous record of 23, set on the very same field two seasons ago. Mahoney stopped six shots in the first quarter, eight in the second, seven in the third and six more in the fourth.

While E-town dropped its fifth straight game --all on the road-- after a 3-0 start, three of its losses have come against nationally-ranked opponents Christopher Newport, Franklin & Marshall and York. Another came at Lynchburg, which is receiving votes in the national poll.

The Blue Jays return to Wolf Field on Saturday for the first time since March 3. They'll face Goucher in a Landmark Conference game at 1 p.m.
