Fast start fuels Lynchburg past Blue Jays

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Facing its second highly-touted opponent in less than 48 hours, Elizabethtown fell victim to Lynchburg's 11-goal first half outburst in a 21-7 road loss Sunday afternoon.

Mike DiGenova netted his first career hat trick while extending his goal streak to four games, and freshman Brandon Sankey had three assists for the Blue Jays.

E-town's Mike Scrafano answered a goal from the Hornets' (2-4) Logan Adams at 12:32 of the first quarter to tie the game at one, but the next 40 minutes belonged to Lynchburg.

Evan Lombardo scored seven times and eight different players had a goal as the Hornets, NCAA Division III quarterfinalists a season ago, tallied 15 of the next 16 goals to take command.

Lynchburg came into Sunday's game with just one win in five games, but all four of its losses were against teams ranked in the top 15 of the USILA National Poll, including three top 10's in No. 1 Salisbury, No. 5 York and No. 7 Cabrini.

Austin Dews and DiGenova scored third-quarter goals for the Jays (3-2). Alex Filbert recorded his first career goal in the fourth, with DiGenova and Cameron Goodling also finding the back of the net.

The Hornets held advantages in many facets of the game. Lynchburg outshot Elizabethtown 45-28, picked up 12 more ground balls (39-27) and doubled up the Jays at the face-off dot 20-10.

Jeremy Klipple caused a pair of Hornet turnovers and collected three ground balls. Michael Hofstedt and Kyle Pienik had a team-high four ground balls.

E-town goalies Jack Myers and Brandon Calle each made six saves. CJ Santora had nine for Lynchburg in 42 minutes, before backups Patrick Cornelius and Noah Bedwell covered the final 17 and change.

Sunday's meeting was the first all-time between the Blue Jays and Hornets. Second-year E-town head coach Chris Perzinski is a 2008 Lynchburg alum, where he played and coached under current Hornets head coach Steve Koudelka.

Elizabethtown's non-conference schedule, one of the toughest in the country, continues next Saturday at 1 p.m., at Franklin & Marshall.
