Wrestling starts 2018-19 season at Messiah Invitational

GRANTHAM, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College wrestling team opened its season at Saturday's Messiah Invitational. The Blue Jays produced two place winners in newcomer Cole Cameron (third at 149 lbs.) and Dayne Ross (fourth at 184), while taking seventh in the team standings.

Senior-eligible Cameron, who previously spent time at Gloucester County College in New Jersey, went 4-1 on the day with two pins. Back-to-back decisions advanced Cameron to the 149-pound semifinals, but fell to Gettyburg's Colin Devlin via a late first period pin (2:52). He bounced back with a 4:42 pin of Ursinus' Alfred Corradeti in the consolation semifinals and a 3:32 pin of Gettysburg's Philip Angelo in the third-place match.

Ross, a junior, rebounded from a first round pin to work all the way back to the consolation final. The Mechanicsburg native pinned UMBC's Christophe Ashby and Liberty's Wallace Canada in his first two consolation matches. Ross also defeated Liberty's Josh McIllhenny, 9-2, in the consolation quarterfinals before a medical forfeit moved him into the third-place match against Messiah's Brain Shermeyer. Shermeyer claimed third with a pin in 1:50.

A number of Elizabethtown's entries made runs back through consolation brackets.

Josh McLaughlin (133), Josh Paisley (141), Colton Rex (141) and Kyle Bythell (157) each reached consolation semis in their respective weight classes. Austin Jones (125) and Max Rhoden (285) advanced to consolation quarterfinal matches before being eliminated from contention.

Freshmen Nick Gonzalez (149), Colton Shriner (165) and Hunter Beaudet (165) all won their first career collegiate matches during Saturday's tournament, while sophomore transfer Harry Marr collected his first victory as a Blue Jay at 165.

As a team, the Blue Jays collected 47.5 points to place seventh of nine teams.

Elizabethtown opens its dual schedule with a home match against York (Pa.) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
