BRYN MAWR, Pa. -- Victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay pushed Elizabethtown men's swimming past Cabrini 106-98 in a dual meet held at Bryn Mawr College Wednesday evening.
The Blue Jays trailed 94-93 entering the meet's final event, but senior
Sam Hirshberg laid down a personal season-best 23.02 50-yard split and E-town's top relay team, which also included
Connor Casey,
Alex Patterson and
Brian Sylvestri, cruised to the win in a time of 1:35.15 --nearly six seconds faster than Cabrini. The triumphant swim, along with a third-place finish from its second relay, allowed E-town to outscore the Cavs by nine, 13-4, in the event.
Prior to the late meet heroics, E-town (4-1) leaned heavily on sophomore
Alex Pecher, who won a pair of individual races and led off for the winning 200 medley relay.
Pecher (backstroke) teamed with
Guillaume Gouronc (breaststroke),
Casey Marshall (butterfly) and
Nick Petrella (freestyle) to win the 200 medley relay in a comfortable 1:42.90. Pecher's 50 split of 25.83 was more than two full seconds faster than the next relay and put the Blue Jays in control of the race. The Hanover, Pennsylvania native also claimed victories in the 50 free with a season and team-best 22.53 and the 100 back (55.84).
Gouronc and Marshall had strong meets as well, both claiming an event win and runner-up finish. Gouronc won the 100 fly in 57.30 after a close battle with teammate
Brock Culver, who swam 57.81. Gouronc, a senior, set season and team-best times in the 100 breast with a 1:02.99, but fell just short to Cabrini's Matthew Schaeffer (1:02.74).
Marshall held off Cabrini's (3-4) Mac Granto in the 200 free with a winning time of 1:51.18, which were personal and program-bests this season. Despite a furious 50 free, Marshall came up less than three-tenths of a second short of beating Schaeffer in the 200 IM for his second individual win of the night. The E-town junior certainly made it interesting, outpacing Schaeffer by 2.9 seconds in the final leg of the event (27.88 to 30.78).
Petrella recorded a runner-up finish in the 100 back and was the only swimmer besides Pecher to break 1:00 (58.16). Freshman
Nathan Tobler took second in the 500 free (5:19.10).
Elizabethtown will look to win its third straight dual when it hosts Juniata on Saturday at 1 p.m. It will be the Jays' home opener after their meet on Nov. 10 against Catholic was postponed.
