Blue Jays rally past Williams, 2-1, in NCAA First Round game

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Elizabethtown overcame frigid temperatures and an early one-goal deficit to defeat Williams, 2-1, in an NCAA Division III Championship First Round game at Cortland Saturday night.

Gilbert Waso scored in the final minutes of the first half, freshman Jorge Sanchiz found the back of the net with the eventual game-winning goal in the 56th minute and Brian Gately made a huge save late to send the Blue Jays (11-4-4) to the Second Round for the second time in three years.

Elizabethtown will face nationally-ranked No. 6 Cortland on Sunday at 5 p.m. The Red Dragons defeated Newbury, 3-1, earlier Saturday.

JD Haaf had a pair of chances early and the Jays opened a 5-1 shot advantage less than 20 minutes into the match, but Williams would strike first.

A ball played into the box by defender Andrew Matthew pinballed off the heads of three different Ephs players before Demian Gass headed it past Gately short side near the left post. Will Felitto and Chris Fleischer assisted on the goal at 21:29.

Waso's persistence tied the game in the 42nd minute for the Blue and Gray.

Off Danny Sullivan's insert from the right corner, Elijah Visser made a quick move left and hit teammate Alex Musgnug with a shot near the left post. The ball rolled loose in the six where Waso found it among no less than 12 bodies. The two-time All-American's initial shot rang the left pipe, but he followed up to score on the rebound and make it 1-1.

Elizabethtown outshot Williams (10-6-3) 12-8 in the first half, while both Gately and the Ephs' Aaron Schein made two saves.

Just over 10 minutes into the second half, the Jays got an outstanding individual effort from Sanchiz to go in front. The Barcelona, Spain native took possession 30 yards out, beat three Williams players and snuck a shot under the right glove of Schein.

The Ephs' urgency would rise as the minutes ticked away. Gately stopped a Justin Adams shot in the 61st minute, before coming up with his biggest stop of the night in the 79th. Williams had numbers when a 50/50 ball got away from two Blue Jay defenders. Gass ran onto it and released a shot near the penalty spot, but Gately got a piece of it with his right foot and glove. The rebound hit off Bobby Fabricant and went right of the goal.

Elizabethtown exceeded 20 shots for the fifth time this season and held a 21-17 edge at the buzzer, though both teams finished with six shots on goal.

The Blue Jays won their 25th game in the Division III edition of the national tournament, which began back in the early 1970s. This year marks Elizabethtown's 26th appearance in the DIII tournament.
