WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Lydia Lawson has been a main focus for opponents all season long, but that hasn't stopped the junior from producing for the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team in 2018. Lawson set a new career high for goals in a season on Saturday in E-town's 3-2 loss at Catholic. Lawson and
Janelle Barna had the goals for the Blue Jays.
Elizabethtown (6-8-2, 3-4-0 Landmark) began the day in the fourth slot for the upcoming Landmark Conference tournament and could still move on with a loss, though outside help would be needed. Not looking for that help, the Blue Jays were set on simply getting the three points and controlling their own destiny.
Catholic (10-4-3, 5-1-1 Landmark) provided early fireworks with a goal in the fourth minute to take a quick 1-0 lead. Maggie Moorcones scored her sixth of the season to give the Cardinals the lead.
Less than a minute after Moorcones' goal, the Blue Jays were level.
Kelli Olsson found Barna for her third of the season that made it 1-1 in the fifth minute. Moments later,
Christine Fox had to be ready for Krista Boretti's header off a Catholic corner kick. The sophomore made the save, her first of nine in the game.
Halle Green put the Cardinals ahead 2-1 in the 12th minute with her third of the year.
The Jays had several shots ring off the frame through the remainder of the first half.
Katrina Morales knocked one off the woodwork in the 24th minute, Barna found the post in the 30th minute, and
Shannon Conlon was denied by one in the 34th minute. Moorcones hit the post for Catholic in the 36th minute.
Grace Boras, who assisted on Moorcones' opening goal, scored one of her own in the 50th minute that put Catholic ahead 3-1.
Lawson was able to get a goal back in the 61st minute, her Landmark-leading 16th of the season. Olsson's free kick delivery found the head of the junior, who was able to deposit it into the back of the net. It was her eighth goal in seven games against conference opponents, which ranks her first among all players. her 16 goals and 39 points are also tops in the league.
The Jays couldn't find the equalizer, though, over the final 29 minutes as the Cardinals held on for the 3-2 win. The loss, coupled with a Moravian win at Goucher, ends the season for Elizabethtown.
