Men's swimming defeats Goucher 149-47

TOWSON, Md. -- The Elizabethtown College men's swim team won nine of 11 events Saturday to open their 2018-19 dual schedule with a commanding 149-47 triumph at Goucher.

Guillaume Gouronc, Casey Marshall and Alex Pecher all had three-win afternoons to push the Blue Jays to the win. Gouronc and Marshall claimed two individual wins and contributed to E-town's (1-0, 1-0 Landmark) winning 200-yard medley relay team. Pecher swam on both winning relay teams (200 medley and 200 freestyle), along with taking the 100 backstroke.

Tommy Kuhn had the top time in the 100 butterfly (56.53) and freshman Alex Patterson notched his first college event win in the 1000 freestyle (11:14.25).

Elizabethtown won the meet's first three events, starting with the 200 medley relay. Pecher, Gouronc, Marshall and Nick Petrella laid down a 1:40.59, almost 12 full seconds ahead of the Gophers' (0-2, 0-1) top relay.

Patterson gapped second-place Hugh MacConvery by nearly 25 seconds in the 1000 free, before Marshall won the 200 free in 1:51.23. Blue Jays filled the top three spots in the 200 free with sophomore Austin Dolaway (1:54.49) and freshman Nathan Tobler (2:00.72) following Marshall to the finish.

Gouronc got his first individual win of the day in the 200 IM (2:10.34). The senior held off teammates Brian Sylvestri (2:15.06) and Ben Spangler (2:17.52) in another 1-2-3 finish for the Jays.

A few events later, in the 100 back, Elizabethtown claimed the top three spots with Pecher posting the top time (55.18). Petrella went second (56.97) and Sam Hirshberg third (1:01.32).

Marshall (5:19.04), Tobler (5:30.67) and Dolaway (5:34.27) made it a top three sweep for E-town in the 500 free, and Gouronc got back in the pool to lead a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.84). Spangler (1:07.61) was runner-up, followed by Tristan Koehler (1:09.23).

Elizabethtown ended the meet by sweeping the top two positions in the 200 free relay. Sylvestri, Koehler, Petrella and Pecher went unchallenged for the win (1:33.73), with the Blue Jays' 'B' team of Brock Culver, Dolaway, Tobler and Hirshberg second in 1:38.49.

Jackson Penner was all that stood between the Jays and an 11-event sweep. Penner won both sprint freestyle events, claiming the 100 free (51.70) and the 50 free in 23.44.

With the women's team also defeating Goucher on Saturday, the Blue Jays gave new head coach Melissa Gates her first career dual victories.

The Blue Jays will train at the Alumni Pool for the next two weeks in preparation for Catholic's visit on Nov. 10 at 1 p.m.
