Women's soccer blasts Goucher on Senior Day

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- A win Saturday afternoon on Senior Day helped the Elizabethtown College women's soccer team in their mission toward qualifying for the Landmark Conference playoffs. The three points the Blue Jays got from blanking Goucher 4-0 coupled with a Moravian loss put E-town in sole possession of fourth in the standings. Lydia Lawson extended her points lead with a pair of goals and an assist. Erika Antunes scored the first of her career and Alli Lasky also supplied a goal in the win.

Elizabethtown (5-7-2, 3-3 Landmark) had the advantage in shots through the first 20 minutes, but Goucher (4-7-3, 0-4-2 Landmark) put two shots on goal that forced Christine Fox into saves. Saves leader Christina Charikofsky made two saves, one in the 20th minute and one in the 23rd minute, to keep it a 0-0 affair.

As the half went on, E-town looked more and more threatening. Lawson tested the Gophers' goalie twice more. Charikofsky made a sprawling save on one attempt that went off the keeper's leg, off the left post, and away from goal. In the 37th minute, Kelli Olsson struck a free kick from 30 yards out that clanked off the crossbar. The header off the bounce by Elizabethtown then went wide right.

Lawson did get her 12th of the season in the 44th minute, but it was not of the common variety. As the Goucher defender went to clear the ball from her own box, Lawson lunged in to block the ball, and did so. The ball ricocheted off her boot and caught the goalie off guard as the ball went into the goal to give Elizabethtown the 1-0 lead moments before halftime.

In search of a second goal in the second half, the Blue Jays grew closer and closer to getting it. Katrina Morales had her shot saved in the 50th minute, and in the 58th, her goal-bound shot had gotten by the keeper, but Sara Naughton was able to step in front and keep it out.

E-town maintained the 1-0 lead, which felt like a larger margin as the Jays kept Goucher mostly contained in their own half. Elizabethtown then struck on a set piece in the 77th minute to increased the lead to 2-0. Madison Burnham delivered a high arcing corner from the right side. Angela Carcella flicked it on across to Antunes on the left side of the six yard box. Antunes was able to quickly settle the ball to her feet and banked the ball in off a defender for the first of her career.

Four minutes later, it was 3-0 after Lasky's third of the season. Lawson got free in the box and put a shot on goal that was saved by Charikorsky, but the rebound went directly over to Lasky, who headed the ball into the open net. Lawson then added her second of the game, 13th of the season, and 37th of her career to put her into a tie for fifth place on the all-time list. Lawson tracked down a ball near the endline and was able to avoid the defender, dribble her way back into the box for a better angle at goal and slipped it past the keeper into the right corner.

Cece Sadek came in to play the final 6:51 of the game in relief of Fox and the two goalies combined for the shutout. Fox made four saves and Sadek had one. Charikofsky stopped eight shots for Goucher.

Elizabethtown will play at DeSales on Tuesday, October 23, at 4 p.m.
