Blue Jays overpower Moravian to stay unbeaten in Landmark play

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College field hockey team kept its winning ways going on Wednesday with a second straight 4-0 shutout win over a Landmark Conference opponent. The Blue Jays scored three of their four goals in the second half and overpowered Moravian for their eighth straight victory and improved to 4-0 in the conference standings. Grace Hardy had a pair of goals for E-town.

Elizabethtown (11-2, 4-0 Landmark) has made a habit of scoring early in the games and nearly did just that 4:50 into Wednesday's contest. Lauren Scheib had a chance on the second Jays' penalty corner of the game. With the goalie out of position, Scheib's attempt bounced toward the cage, but Haley Wrazien was there at the right post to sweep it clear.

Jamie Golubinski had two of her shots stopped by three-time reigning Defensive Athlete of the Week goalie Margo Donlin. They were the only two saves of the day she would need to make.

While Moravian (3-9, 0-4 Landmark) held tough, Elizabethtown was finally on the board a little over 18 and a half minutes in. Offensive Player of the Week Maggie Fees sent a pass up the middle that Hardy received and was able to turn and get in on goal. She beat the Greyhounds' goalie to the right side for her third of the season and first of two in the game.

Ashley Kunsman, who had seven saves in the game for Moravian, stopped a pair of E-town shots right in front of her goal with the first half winding down to keep it 1-0.

Hardy tried for her second 26 seconds into the second half, but was denied. A little over a minute later, she was back around the goal and after her initial was saved, the freshman was able to poke the rebound in for second of the day and first career multi-goal game. It broke a four-game scoreless streak for the Blue Jays' forward.

Fees scored her fifth of the season in the 60th minute to run her goal-scoring streak to four straight games. Scheib dished the ball back to Fees, who was stationed in the middle of the circle. Her shot darted left and in for the goal as E-town got the lead up to 3-0.

Late on, after another Elizabethtown corner, Scheib slung a backhanded pass near the goal mouth. Celene Desko shot the ball, which got deflected by the goalie into the air as it sailed toward the left post. Olivia Beachley, who had inserted the corner for the Jays, was right there to deflect it in for her team-leading seventh goal of the season. Desko's assist on the play was her first career point.

The Blue Jays held a decisive advantage in shot attempts, 19-2, and shots on goal, 12-2. They also had 15 corners to three for Moravian. Donlin's two-save shutout was her seventh of the season and second straight against a Landmark opponent.

Elizabethtown will host Scranton in a key conference matchup at Wolf Field on Saturday, October 13, at 1 p.m.
