Men's golf hosts Elizabethtown Invitational to open fall season

HERSHEY, Pa. -- The Elizabethtown College men's golf team played host to one of the biggest tournament fields in recent memory as 28 teams descended upon the Hershey Country Club East Course for Tuesday afternoon's Elizabethtown Invitational.

The Blue Jays placed 24th in the tournament with a 72-over par score of 356.

Junior Felix Goettfert paved the way for the Blue and Gray with an 11-over par 82, tied for 58th out of more than 130 players. Goettfert shot matching 41s on the front and back nine, and led the hosts with nine pars around the par 71, 6,600-yard course.

Craig Eidle used four pars on the back nine to finish that segment with a 6-over 41 and carded an 88 for the day, second best among Elizabethtown's eight players.

Rookie Caleb Clements, playing as an individual, scored 89 in his first collegiate tournament. Adam Strayton (91) and Tyler Goldberg (95) completed the scoring for the Blue Jays.

Stevenson and Muhlenberg shared the top spot on the leaderboard at day's end with 18-over 302s, but the Mustangs' Evan Welsh outplayed the Mules' Matt Polverino by 10 strokes to give Stevenson the title on a comparison of No. 5 player cards.

Lebanon Valley's David Herbst, who went out early in the morning with the large contingent of teams necessitating an 8 a.m. start for the Dutchmen, E-town, Marywood and Messiah, registered four birdies to lay down an even par 71 that would never be caught for individual medalist honors.

Herbst's Dutchmen placed third in the team scoring with a 307 (+23), while Gettysburg (310, +26) and Alvernia (312, +28) completed the top five.

Elizabethtown will play in the LVC Dutchmen Fall Invitational this coming Monday at Lebanon Country Club.
