Defense stars as men's soccer blanks Eastern

HAVERFORD, Pa. -- Freshman Eli Perry scored his first career points with a goal and an assist and Travis Wilson notched the game-winning goal in the 65th minute as Elizabethtown ended the weekend with a 2-0 victory over Eastern at the Jimmy Mills Tournament Sunday.

Defenders accounted for both Blue Jay goals in the meeting between a pair of teams receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches' NCAA Division III national preseason poll.

Wilson, a converted forward, finished a cross from Perry at the top of the six-yard box midway through the second half to put E-town (2-2) in front for good. It was the first tally of the season for the West Chester native and his fourth career goal.

Perry, the son of former E-town soccer great and Ira R. Herr Hall of Fame inductee Shannon Perry, impressed during the Blue Jays' opening weekend, working his way into the starting lineup by yesterday's Haverford game.

The rookie defender rewarded coach Skip Roderick's decision with a three-point game against Eastern. After assisting on Wilson's icebreaker for his first career point, Perry went far post in the 86th minute for his first career goal and a 2-0 lead, locking down E-town's second win of the season. Junior forward Gilbert Waso assisted on Perry's marker.

Goalkeeper Brian Gately made five saves to register his first career clean sheet with the Jays.

Elizabethtown was the aggressor offensively on Sunday, taking 20 shots --10 in each half. The Eagles (3-1) countered with 12, but the Blue Jays' defense was stellar in the second half, only allowing two Eastern shots on frame.

Waso led all players with six shots and Wilson had five for the Blue and Gray in handing Eastern its first loss of the new season. Cade Harmon took a team-high five shots for the Eagles and Quentin Keibler got credit for four saves.

The Blue Jays are in the early stages of a 24-day stretch of road or neutral site games. They'll try to reclaim the Smith-Herr Boot from local rival Franklin & Marshall, currently ranked sixth in the nation, on Wednesday evening at 7:30 in Lancaster.
