Golfers take seventh at LVC Dutchmen Spring Invitational

LEBANON, Pa. -- Kyle Hakun gained his third straight top five finish and Chuck Johnston played his best round of the season as the Elizabethtown men's golf team placed seventh at Monday afternoon's Lebanon Valley College Dutchmen Spring Invitational.

Hakun, who won LVC's Fall Invitational on the same Lebanon Country Club course, missed sweeping the tournaments by a mere four strokes. The Springfield, Pennsylvania, product matched his score from the fall tourney, shooting a 3-over par 75. With a handful more teams and just under 30 additional golfers, Hakun's round Monday was good for second place to individual medalist Thomas Moran of host LVC.

Moran was the only golfer in the 61-player field to shoot a sub-par round, finishing with a 1-under 71.

Johnston averaged a career 18-hole score of 85.96 coming into his senior season, but ran into difficulties in his fall finale and spring debut. He took a step in the right direction to turning his season around with an 84 (+12) Monday, second best among the Blue Jays. Johnston also rebounded nicely from the 95 he shot at Lebanon CC back in October at LVC's fall tournament, gaining 11 strokes.

Johnston tied for 26th on the leaderboard, while Felix Goettfert collected an 88 (+16) to tie for 38th. Jeff Light made his second appearance for E-town and put down a 91 to improve upon his debut by three shots.

Lebanon Valley 'Blue' surrounded Hakun with two of the top three finishers in medalist Moran and third-place Andrew Capodanno (76, +4). The Dutchmen also got a top 10 from David Herbst (79, +7) in winning the team title with a 19-over par 307. Penn State Berks was second, its 316 nine strokes off the pace. Dickinson (321), Hood (326) and Ursinus (329) were separated by just eight strokes to make up the rest of the top five.

Elizabethtown's 336 (+48) was one shot back of Lebanon Valley 'White' for sixth.

E-town will welcome teams from around the region to the Hershey Country Club's East Course on Thursday for the annual Blue Jay Classic.
