Trio leads men's golf in opening round of Messiah Falcon Spring Classic

HARRISBURG, Pa. -- Kyle Hakun, Chuck Johnston and Garrett Leib shot matching rounds of 82 and all five Elizabethtown entries were in the 80s as the Blue Jays finished the opening round of the Messiah Falcon Spring Classic in sixth place Sunday.

The Blue Jay trio sits tied for 19th on the leaderboard, but will contend with a different course during Monday's second and final round. Sunday's action took place on the par 72, 6,635-yard course at Blue Ridge Country Club, while the field moves just down the street to Colonial Golf & Tennis Club, Monday.

Leib, a freshman from Spring Grove, led all Elizabethtown players with four birdies on the day. Three came on the front nine, where he shot a team-best 2-over par 38.

Hakun's lone birdie came on the par 5 fifth, which played at 490 yards, but the senior was consistent throughout his round, which was anchored by eight pars.

Johnston managed a birdie late on 17 and registered seven pars while shooting 5-over on both the front and back nines.

Junior Craig Eidle checked in with an 85 and senior Jeff Light shot 89.

The Jays are within striking distance of the top three in the team standings, as they sit 12 strokes back of Stevenson. Elizabethtown is five shots behind Dickinson for fifth after compiling a 331 (+43), Sunday.

Lebanon Valley came out firing to take a four-shot lead over Franklin & Marshall into Monday's final round. The Dutchmen posted a 308 (+20) to F&M's 312 (+24).

Stevenson's Andrew Wally was the lone golfer in the 54-player field to dip below par, leading the way with a 2-under 70, three shots better than Messiah's Jordan Kirsch.

Elizabethtown will wrap up its season Monday with the completion of the Messiah Falcon Spring Classic. Tee time from Colonial Golf & Tennis Club is set for 9 a.m.
