Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Mahoney's last-second save preserves Blue Jays' Landmark win streak

SCRANTON, Pa. -- Scranton pushed the Elizabethtown College men's lacrosse to the brink, but goalie Tom Mahoney came up with his biggest save of the game when it mattered most and helped the Blue Jays extend their Landmark Conference regular season unbeaten streak to 19 straight with an 8-7 road win at Fitzpatrick Field Thursday night. Phil Kyger, Jason Clough, and Mike Specht each had two goals for E-town.

There were just three goals scored in the opening quarter, but they all belonged to Elizabethtown (10-3, 5-0 Landmark). Kyger forced a turnover after Scranton (6-5, 2-2 Landmark) grabbed the opening face-off. On E-town's ensuing possession in its offensive third, the shots started flying. Dan Bednarik had a chance saved by goalie Alex Malecki. Joe Clark picked up the ground ball and 17 seconds later, Kyger tallied his first of two in the game, his 21st of the year, off a feed from Nick Specht.

While the Royals won 17 of 18 face-offs, the Jays' defense was able to return possession to the offense. E-town caused ten turnovers in the game, led by Jeremy Klipple and Zac Knapp. The duo each had a pair of CTs.

Knapp snared a ground ball on a Scranton miscue, Elizabethtown's clear attempt was good, and Cody Larkin unleashed a shot on Malecki. He made the initial save, but Larkin grabbed the rebound. It would wind up in the hands of Clough, who scored at 11:19 to make it 2-0 Blue Jays, his first of the game.

Clark's 30th goal of the season came with 6:11 left in the first quarter and put E-town up 3-0 going into the second.

Mahoney faced 12 shots from Scranton in the second quarter as the Royals settled in, but only needed to make three saves. He did not allow a first-half goal and after Mike Specht scored with 1:30 left in the half, Elizabethtown went into halftime ahead 4-0.

Scranton got things going early in the third after starting the second half a man-up on a late first-half penalty by the Blue Jays. Peter Roche scored for the Royals to cut the lead to 4-1.

Clough scored nearly four minutes later, his second of the contest, to get the lead back to four at 5-1, but from there the Royals caught up and turned it into a nail biter. Scranton scored three unanswered to get back within a goal. Mike Specht added his second of the game with 1:04 left in the third to provide a little breathing room for the Jays going into the fourth quarter.

Michael Elefonte and William Joyce got the Royals level at 6-6 in the first three minutes of the fourth. Like Kyger had done off the opening face-off, Nick Specht started off a series of plays that would end up in the senior scoring the go-ahead goal. He forced Patrick Sawyer into a turnover and got E-town going the other way. He had a shot ring off the post. Clough scooped up the ground ball to keep possession with Elizabethtown and within ten seconds, Clark would find Nick Specht for the goal that put EC back in front, 7-6.

Kyger made it 8-6 two and a half minutes later with the eventual game-winner off a pass from Larkin.

Casey Green scored a man-up for Scranton with 2:56 left in the game to make it a one-goal affair. The Royals won the face-off, but turned it over. At the other end, Kyger went for the hat trick, but Malecki made the stop and with possession, Scranton called a timeout.

Mahoney's number was called late as he saved Jake Haimson's chance at tying the game with 1:45 remaining.

Elizabethtown had possession with less than 40 seconds, but Scranton's defense forced a turnover and got the ball back to send the attack the other way. As precious seconds ticked off, William Joyce fired off one last shot. Mahoney made his eighth and final save to secure the Jays' win and move the team to 5-0 in the conference.

The Blue Jays will play Washington & Lee at the US Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks Glencoe, Md. on Tuesday, April 18 at 6 p.m.
