Schneider shines as men's swimming beats Gallaudet

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Alec Schneider captured both sprint freestyle races and came within four hundredths of a second of setting a new career mark in the 50-yard freestyle as part of a three-win afternoon against Gallaudet, Saturday. The Blue Jays won seven events overall on their way to a 138-65 victory at the Alumni Pool.

Schneider teamed with freshman Alex Pecher (backstroke), junior Guillaume Gouronc (breaststroke) and sophomore Casey Marshall (butterfly) in anchoring the Blue Jays' winning 200 medley relay team in 1:43.81. The Spring City, Pa., native later won the 50 free in a season-best 22.51, .04 off his career best from last year's Landmark Championships, and the 100 free, also in a season best 50.17.

Gallaudet (0-3) would have its share of highlights, specifically from Ben Sealts and Jonathan Tikhonoff, who each won twice. Sealts took the 1000 free (10:26.22) and 200 IM (2:02.31), while Tikhonoff topped the 200 free (1:55.68) and 100 breast (1:05.60).

But Elizabethtown used its strength in numbers to wear down the Bison and eventually pulled away by winning four consecutive events. Marshall started E-town's run of success with a season-best 52.58 in the 100 fly, missing his school record by just over a tenth of a second. Schneider won the 100 free, Pecher triumphed in the 100 back (55.20) and David Foery took top honors in the 500 free with a time of 5:20.70.

Marshall also enjoyed a three-win meet, including two in relays. After helping the 200 medley relay to victory, the second-year swimmer from Dover, Pa., capped the meet by leading off the winning 200 free relay. Marshall was joined by Ryan Weber, Tommy Kuhn and Foery, who emerged with a 1.5-second victory over Blue Jay teammates Austin Dolaway, Brian Sylvestri, JD Sterbens and Ben Spangler in an exciting finale.

The Blue Jays will swim their first road dual of the 2017-18 season next Saturday, at Catholic, at 1 p.m.
