Men's swimming clipped by Drew

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Casey Marshall, Nick Petrella and Alec Schneider all captured a pair of wins Saturday, but the Elizabethtown College men's swim team fell in a closely-contested dual to Landmark rival Drew, 135-121.

Marshall, Schneider and Petrella all won individual events, along with Ben Spangler, and the trio also teamed with David Foery to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:33.23, the Landmark's fourth fastest time this season.

Spangler collected E-town's (2-2, 1-2 Landmark) first win of the afternoon as he edged out teammate Guillaume Gouronc in the 100 breaststroke. Spangler timed in with a season-best 1:05.46, with Gouronc posting a 1:06.47.

Two events later, Schneider ripped off a 22.78 to win the 50 free for the third time in four duals this season.

Petrella entered as the favorite in the 200 backstroke and lived up to that billing with a 2:07.64 to defeat Drew's Alex Longacre by more than five seconds.

The last time Marshall swam competitively in the Alumni Pool he nearly broke his own 100 butterfly school record with a 52.58. Saturday's race didn't quite feature that pace, but a 53.81 was still good enough to top five competitors for the sophomore's third victory in four races this fall.

The meet-opening 200 medley relay should have served as a precursor to how Saturday's dual would go. Both schools feature some outstanding talent and Drew emerged with a win in the medley relay by just .16, swimming a 1:41.30 to E-town's 1:46 as Marshall and Schneider tried to rally the Jays with faster splits in the fly and free than their Ranger opponents. The finishing tim was a season-best for the hosts.

Aside from the Blue Jays five wins in 14 events, a number of E-town swimmers recorded their fastest marks of the season.

Freshman Austin Dolaway dropped two seconds in the 200 free to place second in 1:54.64 and also broke into the 24s in the 50 free with a 24.91.

Spangler built on his win in the 100 breast with a season-best 2:22.48 in the 200 to lead Gouronc in a 2-3 finish for the Blue and Gray. Gouronc also eclipsed his previous best time by six-tenths of a second (2:24.32).

Tommy Kuhn cut more than a second in the 100 free, taking third in 53.19.

Tristan Koehler went 1:10.11 in the 100 breast and Nick Petrella 23.82 in the 50 free. Junior Brandon Wolf (6:10.94) and freshman Michael Chaffier (6:13.69) each had their best 500 free performances.

For the Rangers (2-4, 2-1), Mack Fox swept the distance free events (500 and 1000), Jack Mahoney won the 100 and 200 free, and Michael Ma was victorious in the 100 back and 200 IM.

The Blue Jays have a quick turnaround before hosting Lebanon Valley Monday evening at 6.
